While my friends stayed at L'Auberge, I chose Dar Ayed and loved it. It is run by wonderful, helpful locals from the small town and I don't think the photos do the beautiful place justice. The watchtower is wonderful to climb and get a view (with a friendly cat companion). The rooms were beyond comfortable and very stylish - I was inspired to buy my own beautiful woven bedspread! There is a pool, lots of outdoor hangouts and views for days. The gardens are beautiful with fresh flowers and veg. Finally I had the best meal of my 2 weeks in Tunisia here (and food is a big part of why I travel). An incredible bean stew, appetizers, goat in tajine, dessert, fresh fruit. It was delightful and the staff was so lovely. I felt very safe and well-cared for as a solo female traveller.

Despite the language barrier, we connected with the French ladies at our table, with host Patrick kindly translating. It was a delightful surprise to have such an authentic French experience in Tunisia. Writing in the guest book with ink for the first time made it even more special. Staying here is worth it for the dinner alone—the most delicious way to taste camel meat and dates!
