Hiro is a fantastic host, along with Marie, his lovely dog. He was very helpful and gave us really good recommendations for food and he was kind enough to accommodate any of our needs. The whole experience of the traditional Japanese house, with the amazing onsen and the futons is really worth it. Another plus is that the house is isolated, which made our staying really peaceful and quiet. Matane!

Nice, warm and homely. Only a small space but it can only fit 4 guests anyway so it’s a perfect size with two showers as well! The beds were also quite big with plenty of space to put your things. It’s a bit away from the train station but you can catch buses or walk about 15 minutes.

It was really nice getting to chat with the owners when we got there. They were really welcoming and it was kind of like staying with family. When I got sick, I was given medicine and made sure I felt alright. They helped us find food and recommended a great place that was nearby and gave us extra snacks when we left. The art throughout the building is beautiful and if you are interested the owners will talk with you about what is there. The baths were a nice temperature and we never felt rushed.

Everything.. The location was great, but what really made it exceptional was Yoshi and his beautiful wife. He went past what is expected in every way. It's an excellent place, I really can't recommend it highly enough..... He offered to collect us from dinner as it was raining (twice), he gave us(free) professional portrait pictures (which he took in his own photo studio) he provides QR codes with directions to all local attractions and hiking trails, he warned us about leeches at the abyss trail and next day provided us with a spray to remove them and a bear bell (both items were thankfully returned to him unused) and gave us a lift to the station when leaving and carried our bags for us....... we were there 2 days. If there was a Nobel prize for hotels, he would win it.

Koundo Guest House is a beautiful 2-store traditional style japanese house located in a lovely neighborhood nearby many touristic spots in Nikko. The manager - a kind and discrete old japanese man who sleeps in a room downstairs - receptioned us with soft drinks and showed us the house facilities and a map of the neighborhood. We loved the whole experience and we certainly want to come back one day.

About a 20-minute walk from the Nikko shrines, Annex Turtle Hotori-An is situated next to the Daiya river and green forests. It features hot spring baths with river views.
