It's rare, especially when you are traveling far from home, to arrive somewhere like a guesthouse and quickly, in the hour, feel a sense of home. Not only the Azumaya guesthouse is very well located, but its small -yet actually perfect- size combined with the little number of guests really creates a cocoon that is rare to find when traveling. I indeed extended my stay as soon as I arrived because I had the feeling I would miss something of the city thanks to the comfort and atmosphere it offered. The managers Nozomi and Shotaro take good care of the place, and mostly of their guests. They will try to accommodate your requests as much as possible. Plus, they do speak English if your Japanese got rusty like mine. They also will recommend you places to visit, places to eat and things to do if you bored, and sometimes even join you with pleasure for a meal or late night drink if their schedule allows it. Azumaya probably offered me one of my favorite stays during my many trips to Japan and I couldn't be more grateful.

The offered map with suggestions is the best I have ever had. Great design work with clear information and nice recomendations, especially for food: great selection! The staff was always welcoming and ready to talk about the day and the routines at Tabishiro. It was something we particularly enjoyed there. We felt like we integrated the family at the house. Nice bar with comfortable rooms. Showers are shared but very clean. Nice toasts for the breakfast. The one with Matsumoto's honey is a must try. If you are in Matsumoto, you have to stay in this place.

Our stay at Raicho was just fantastic, thanks to the super friendly and professional staff members and the increadible cozy guest house (the fire place was just soo relaxing). The staff was highly attentive and booked dinner reservations, shuttled us to the dinner places or also bus stops and was always on top of what we were planning to do (e.g. when we planned to rent out mountain bikes, the staff already had prepared everything in the morning on the day we went for the ride). Many thanks to the whole Raicho team making our 3 night stay a highlight of our Japan trip!

The old couple that runs the guesthouse are great people. Little English but Google Translate helps. They will even explain how to eat the Japanese dishes. The rooms are cozy, the onsen is very nice (although a bit hot at times) and the Guesthouse is very close to the Sawado bus terminal. The surrounding area is beautiful and Kamikochi is half an hour by bus. All in all a great experience.

Excellent room, even more spacious and beautiful than in the pictures. Very well equipped, and there's a huge supermarket next door which is very convenient. There were even games and coloring books which the kids appreciated. We had a great stay!
