Located in the centre of Takayama Historic District, Ryokan Tanabe 旅館田邊 is one of the most historical ryokans in the city. It features Japanese-style rooms and free WiFi in all areas. Guests can request relaxing massage treatments or soak in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, which are made of rocks and cypress wood. Everything! This was the most beautiful ryokan with wonderful staff who were welcoming and attentive throughout our stay. We had breakfast and dinner in our room and they were both superb - beautifully presented, exceptional tastes and served gracefully by the staff. A true delight! The amenities were comfortable and the onsen beautiful with both indoor and outdoor baths. The hospitality of Ryokan Tanabe is exceptional - if you are looking for a great ryokan experience I highly recommend staying here.

Situated at the heart of historic Takayama Old Town and just steps away from Takayama Jinya Morning Market, the traditional Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan offers personalised hospitality, hot spring baths and carefully prepared Japanese meals using Hida Beef. Free pick-up shuttles are available from JR Takayama Station, a 3-minute ride away. Free WiFi is available throughout the property.

Authentic Japanese set meals are served for breakfast and dinner. This was probably our favourite accommodation during our entire trip in Japan. Not only was takayama itself beautiful to travel to by train but the hospitality at Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan was amazing and I would definitely return here when I come to Takayama next. Would definitely recommend the traditional meal experience as well! They will also pick you up/drop you off at the train station as well for no extra cost!

Just 40 metres from restored Edo-era post town Magome-Juku, Chaya Hotel has simple traditional rooms with futon bedding and a tatami-mat floor. It has a hot public bath, and Japanese meals are available for a fee. We had a wonderful stay at Magome Chaya! We booked a private double room and messaged them in advance, asking to include meals in our plan (breakfast and dinner). Both were delicious and served on their restaurant across the street. Communication was great from start to end, and they did inform us several times in advance that it's cash payment only - plan accordingly. The rooms are on the second floor, together with shared bathrooms. On the first floor, you have more bathrooms and also the washroom (female and male), a lounge area, a small guest kitchen, and a laundry room. We slept well, and it was quiet during the night - rooms have heaters, so it wasn't cold. The pillow is indeed, as other reviews mention, a bit hard. I slept without it - perhaps if they changed them for a more 'generic' one, it'd please more people ☺️ The minshuku is located at a beautiful spot in Magome, so I'd most definitely recommend this place! Book and plan in advance, as accommodations get full quickly here. Magome is beautiful, and the Nakasendo Trail is an easy one. I highly recommend it for everyone! Thanks for having us 🙏🏻
