Set in a renovated 18-the century building on the shores of Lake Orta, B&B AL DOM is in Sacro Monte di Orta and offers free Wi-Fi throughout, a garden, and a terrace.

Although the city is forbidden for cars (limited traffic zone), Massimo provided us with a pickup-point and guided us to a central parking garage after which he drove us back to the b&b; the welcome was nice and efficient, with Massimo explaining the village and sharing a full list of culinary recommendations, which we immediately tried out. From the well-equipped and clean room (with surprisingly comfortable beds, normally I always have my issues) we had a balcony and a great view over the lake and the island. The room was very comfortable, with complementary beverages in the mini-bar (water, cola, Fanta). A small street (with barely traffic) separates the main building from the wonderful garden with private lake-access (this is an absolute highlight). A diverse and rich breakfast is provided.

Set in a historic building of the 17th century, La Contrada dei Monti is in Orta San Giulio a few steps from the lake. It offers a courtyard with tables and chairs and exposed stone walls.

The rooms feature a TV, a work desk and a bathroom with hairdryer and free toiletries. Some have a spa bath and wood-beamed ceilings. It was pretty, clean and in a wonderful location.

Only 50 metres from Lake d'Orta shores, Locanda di Orta is located in the pedestrian-only area of Orta San Giulio, and offers a terrace, a restaurant, and an al fresco bistrot with panoramic views. WiFi is free throughout. This was a complete delight. The rooftop breakfast area, the view, the ambience. Superb

Rooms have wood-beamed ceilings, exposed stone walls, and views of Lake Orta. They are also all air conditioned and feature a minibar, TV with satellite channels and tea and coffee-making facilities. Central location, overlooking the square. Underground parking nearby (€20 per day), under ten minutes walk from the hotel. Fabulous breakfast that caters well for all tastes. It included meats, cheese, vegetables, fresh fruit, cakes, yoghurt, freshly made coffee by the staff… you name it! Eclectic decor, which was a creative mix of traditional & modern. Separate WC to shower. Spacious shower (in the bedroom, but with a glass screen). Comfy bed in spacious bedroom. Very helpful staff. Dog friendly (€10 per night).
