Roughly halfway between Madagascar and the Mozambique coast, Mayotte boasts all of the allure you’d expect from a tropical island.
It’s encircled by a coral barrier reef, which protects one of the world’s largest lagoons. You can go snorkelling or scuba diving in the lagoon, which shelters thousands of colourful fish, or watch sea turtles nesting on the southern beaches. You may even spot humpback whales calving off the south shore during summer.
Inland, the foothills of Mont Choungui are packed with hiking trails. Follow one to the summit and be rewarded with stunning views over the Comoros Islands to the west. Other forest reserves on the island include Majimbini and Songoro Mbili, home to wildlife such as lemurs and makis.
Though the island is officially recognised as a French region, the warm and friendly Mayotte culture is closely related to neighbouring Comoros.

The Ibis hotel is a 5 minute walk from the main airport terminal in Mayotte, so absolutely no difficulty in finding the place. Check in went smoothly and reception kindly switched our room after a small mix up with room type. The bedroom was well appointed with a comfortable large bed, good a/c, and a fantastic shower with good pressure. The restaurant, situated adjacent to the hotel and the pool, had decent options for dinner and we opted for the daily special. The following morning we had a fantastic buffet breakfast with excellent choice of food. Thankfully there was no restriction on water use in the hotel, as the rest of the island is unfortunately struggling with water availability. Getting into town was easy. From the airport we grabbed a taxi and got to the ferry in about 10 minutes. Taxis are plentiful there and if you choose to wait, you can take a shared taxi for as little as 2euro a person. If you want a private taxi its possible to negotiate a flat rate.
