Having gained independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan is a young country. But the roots of this vast land are ancient.
For centuries, this area of land was a major crossroads along the Silk Road – an age-old trading route that stretched all the way from China to the Mediterranean. Samarkand, one of three major cities dotted along the road, contains so many architectural feats from this period that it has been classed entirely as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. See for yourself at the Registan, a wide plaza bordered by three mosaic-covered madrassas (religious schools) with bright turquoise domes. To the west, Bukhara offers similarly impressive landmarks, including the ruins of a 5th-century royal compound known as the Ark, while the walled city of Khiva further north is the most remote but best-preserved of the Silk Road cities. Here you’ll find stunning mosques, mausoleums and palaces towering over a labyrinth of streets. But there’s more to Uzbekistan than ancient history. Tashkent, the urban capital in the eastern region, is refreshingly cosmopolitan, while in the far north you can visit the Aral Sea – formerly one of the world’s largest lakes now on the verge of disappearing completely.

The best hotel in Samarkand. The hotel staff is always there to help. Toni and the team always do their best to make sure you get everything you need and more. They are really great. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and clean.The breakfast is excellent. We will return to this hotel.

New hotel with good facilities, everything is new and not worn out. Bathroom is very comfortable, bed is comfortable for sleep.

What a lovely stay — by far the best hotel we have experienced in Uzbekistan.
A new, cosy hotel in the heart of the old town, with all major sites within a 10-minute walk. Although newly renovated, it fully retains its traditional character, especially in the room. The bed is very comfortable, the room is spacious and completely dark at night, which gives us an excellent sleep.
Breakfast is delicious, and the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful — in particular Jacob (Yakub), who looks after us with warmth and attention every day at reception.
If we return to Bukhara, we will definitely stay here again.

We received wonderful hospitality during our stay! The welcoming staff went out of their way to ensure we felt great. The rooms are spacious and tastefully designed, and the breakfast is good. The location is convenient, as it's not far from the airport, the railway station, or Registan—all of which can be reached in 10-15 minutes by taxi.
