An ancient crossroads of civilisations and cultures, Oman offers intrepid travellers the chance to engage with an Arab country that’s refreshingly humble. Its varied landscapes leave a treat for the eyes, with unspoiled stretches of coastline strewn with white-sand beaches. Mudbrick villages cling to the side of rocky valleys. Soaring mountain ranges are sliced with bottomless canyons, while the great Wahiba Sand Dunes seem to ripple endlessly into the desert. All this is spread across three huge regions. The northernmost is home to Muscat, Oman’s chaotic capital. Here you can find a myriad of old forts, grand mosques and royal palaces – some explorable on foot, others requiring a little more effort to reach. To escape the crowds, take a day trip to Nakhal Fort, a stone-carved citadel found at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. These towering peaks stretch all the way to the United Arab Emirates, hiding riverbed oases and jagged fjords. In the southern region, the palm-fringed beaches of Salalah make for an ideal retreat after the long, dusty journey down the coast. Accommodation options are aplenty here, with a range of hotel resorts and simple guesthouses to choose from in the bigger cities and coastal towns.

Absolutely beautiful location with excellent facilities and the company of a wonderful host. Amer was kind and helpful and took us on a stunning trip dune bashing and meeting a Bedouin family. The sunset camel ride was also memorable and our children loved every minute in the desert. We couldn’t recommend a better place to stay with stunning views, privacy and only 3 tents available for the ultimate peaceful trip. Thank you Amer for a truly memorable experience. We will be back.

What was my criteria for a good a desert camp?
Ans:-
1) should be situated/surrounded by dunes. Should be deep enough in the desert.
2) should not be near other camps/ lowest light pollution possible.
3) economical, clean, having all necessities, good food, authentic desert experience
4) if you plan it right, the milky way galaxy viewing/ starry nights.
5) offering a variety of activities
After a 48 hour frenzy of sifting through listings on booking.com, i finally stumbled upon Khalid’s camp. So, how was our experience, you ask?
We made a very last minute booking and reached there by evening, but right from the get go, khalid was super responsive. He actively provided all the necessary details for the meeting point on whatsapp and was waiting for us when we arrived there. Wasted no time and took us straight 24 kms deep into the desert. Situated on top of a dune, the camp boasts of solitude from other camps. The place runs on solar power and has wifi and all sockets for charging devices, which is a good thing. There are no generators. It is so silent, you could hear a pin drop.
It is a new property and very meticulously planned by khalid. There are three cabins, which is perfect to have a good blend of being social and having privacy. We were welcomed with fruits, dates, omani tea&coffee and juice. Khalid made sure we were comfortable in our cabin. After a short rest, dinner was served (additional price, standard with other camps). Succulent beef and grilled bbq chicken along with hummus was a palate delight. They also had vegitarian options which very considerate.
While we had dinner, khalid prepared a campfire under the stars. We were joined by other guests and all of us shared stories of our travels/ adventures. Khalid told us about the stars and constillations and we bombarded him with questions about omani culture and omani way of life, and he answered every single one. Hours went by, felt like minutes.

Staying at this hotel felt like living in the beautiful old Oman era. I absolutely loved the authentic design featuring charming details like wooden roofs, lumber beds, stone sinks, magnificent log reception desk and the massive Castle in the middle.
The hospitality was just as impressive. The staff were incredibly polite, and the reception was open 24 hours, making us feel very cared for. The cafe serves high-quality coffee, I particularly loved the Cappuccino and Mocha.
Breakfast was exceptionally tasty with very fast servicel. I highly recommend ordering the Omani tray it was delicious.
