The Iraqi Kurdistan region in the north is also worth exploring, defined by its waterfalls, mountains and natural springs. The area offers plenty of opportunities for hiking amongst these sights, as well as the large lake of Dokan and the ancient cave paintings at Gondik.

An exceptional hotel and certainly the best I stayed in during a week in Iraqi Kurdistan. THe staff were all trained so well - they were courteous, friendly and spoke a generally excellent level of English. The swimming pool area (indoor/outdoor) with two saunas, steam room, Hamam and jacuzzi was superb, and opening hours of 6am to midnight were more than generous. The location is out of town (so no traffic noise) but easy to get to. WiFi was consistent and strong, and room service very reasonably priced with a large selection. My only slight complaint was that, being there during Ramadan, the usual buffet breakfast was replaced by serving a set breakfast, which included many items I would never choose on a buffet. I imagine if visitors go when the usual buffet breakfast is running it would be very good, and certainly preferable to having someone in the kitchen decide what you might want to eat!

The staff were very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to ensure we had a great stay! The rooms on Level 2 are exceptional quality and so spacious. The hotel is so conveniently located we could walk to dinner and the museum without any trouble.

During the same visit to Duhok, I have tried multiple hotels, and physically checked some to find a decent hotel, until I found DDK recommended by someone.
In my opinion, if you're an international traveler, you might be shocked if you book at any hotel, really shocked, but DDK hotel is a clean professional hotel, comfortable like the really good hotels you see around the world.
I'm pretty sure there are similar hotels, but it's not easy to find them and they all look great online.
