It was an amazing place steeped in history!

It was an amazing place steeped in history! The walk to the castle is a must as there are beautiful views at every turn. You will find yourself awestruck trying to fathom how it was possible to create a town amongst the boulders. It’s truly an amazing and magical place.

An amazing town with great views. Climbed up to the castle. All the houses built around the boulders were so interesting. Parking is very challenging here. Not great if you have mobility challenges.

Monsanto is a wonderful and unique town perched high amongst enormous boulders with Castle ruins and stunning views across Portugal. There are is an easy walk to the Castle and great coffee/wine shops and an excellent restaurant Monsanto Cafe and Bistro to enjoy.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways.

Monsanto was a bit other worldly in some ways. There was an old castle with an archangel Michael chapel - the House of the Dragon, a TV series, was filmed there. Many of the buildings had a huge boulder as one side of the structure or maybe a roof. We loved the hiking around there as well. And the views were spectacular. You could just feel the history around you.

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and...

Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far. It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding. The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort. We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there. If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk...

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.

An absolute pleasure to stay here with super kind and relaxed hosts. Monsanto was our favourite town in Portugal and our wonderful and thoughtfully designed accommodation and kind hosts added enormously to our experience. The charming terrace was a wonderful place for breakfast or a drink. The sister restaurant also had a glorious terrace and excellent food. Highly recommended! Can't wait to return!

We had a wonderful stay at Casa de David. The room is beautifully appointed and our host was very welcoming and helpful. Monsanto is an interesting, historic village. Eating out options were limited in the village as we were near the end of the season so it would be wise to take a few provisions. We did have an excellent breakfast provided by Estela.

The owner is a cheerful and helpful lady. She prepared a good breakfast for the guests. The accommodation is near Monsanto, making it very easy for guests to enjoy the beautiful sunset at the rock village and then head back for a good night's sleep. And we were happy to be under a starry sky during our stay.

The place is amazing and Ingrid was extremely helpful. Breakfast is continental and a communal affair around a large table with the other guests. We walked to Monsanto for an evening meal and returned the following day to visit the castle - a must.
