Pretty much everything. The roof terrace for sunset drinks and the view. The historic details and the breakfasts in the hotel restaurant were fabulous. I was also spoilt since it was my Birthday with a bottle of Prosecco and a lovely card in our room.

The hotel is very convenient for exploring the city - it is located close to all the sights, but not in the thick of the city noise (although during the student holidays it seems there is nowhere to hide from it - we were lucky, there were no holidays and we slept peacefully with the window open). The parking lot recommended by the hotel is very convenient, two or three minutes' walk away on the same street. (The hotel offers a special price for parking). Upon arrival, you can safely turn right to the hotel onto the street, which seems to be a pedestrian street, but in fact it is not - right next to the hotel doors there is a parking space for unloading luggage).

FAQs about hotels in Coimbra

A Seat of Learning and Royalty

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.

The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.

The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.

The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.

Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

I went to Coimbra for a conference.

I went to Coimbra for a conference. I stayed in old town so I could walk and get a taste of both downtown life and being at the conference submerged in my field of work. Coimbra was enjoyable. Safe, quiet but everything a town has to offer. A selection of restaurants, reliable and accessible transport and some interesting walking tours that give you some history of the town and its culture and important significance. As well as lots of hills to walk up and down.

This modern city on an old historical site

This modern city on an old historical site has much to offer for it's size of 140k pop. A prestigious University, a clean and beautiful river, upscale retail shopping, restaurants, entertainment, and UNESCO World Heritage sites to visit. Queen Isabel/Saint Elizabeth might like what they've done with the place. All the quality pace of Porto and Lisbon w/o the Urban pressure.

The city is based on simple tourism and education due to the presence of the University of Coimbra. The landlords there refuse to rent to anyone but students. They refuse to grant leases to tenants, even though this is against the law.

Coimbra as a former capital, it’s full of historic buildings and fascinating attractions. The University of Coimbra is a highlight, especially its breathtaking library. The Cathedral is also incredibly beautiful and a must-see. The city’s rich history and charm make it a wonderful destination to explore.

Coimbra is a very nice town.

Coimbra is a very nice town. And you can go by train to Aveiro, another pleasant city, about one hour from Coimbra. And with a taxi or uber you can reach Conimbriga, old roman ruins (the best in the Iberic Peninsula), very interesting place.

This was a fantastic find on our holiday in Portugal! Bed, breakfast and parking all in the centre of town! Fantastic staff who went out of their way to help and had plenty of suggestions on what to do and where to eat! Bed was firm 👍, breakfast was delicious with a large variety of choices. Easy walking to university, cathedral. Great value! Rooftop area for drinks with a great view though when we were there it did rain at night! ☹️
