Everything, the accommodation is of high quality comfort with the best views of Calheta - but above and beyond has to be the quality of the kitchen, it’s chefs and food, unbelievably delicious and value for money. Definitely book breakfast and at least have one dinner, you’ll likely have dinner every evening.

The Saccharum is a big hotel, with many rooms, yet you'll feel extremely well taken care of. The rooms are beautiful and large, you'll find many pools, including a wonderful rooftop one with many places to sit, read, and relax. There are many bars and restaurants. We were warmly welcomed by the staff, that went the extra mile because it was my wife's birthday. We were offered a bottle of champagne in the room, there were rose petals on the bed, and we had a nice surprise dessert at the end of our meal in the Alambique restaurant. We were given the opportunity to enjoy the hotel amenities after we had checked out for our last day, which was really enjoyable. Everything was perfect from the breakfast to the cocktails in the rooftop bar. Many thanks to all the staff that we had the opportunity to be in contact with. I can only recommend for you to stay at least a few days here. Oh there's an artificial sand beach near the hotel, but I'm not sure you'll want to leave the Saccharum during your stay : )

We had a pleasant time during our stay in the hotel. The view from the room was spectacular, the room itself was spacious and clean. I really liked the breakfast, fresh and various choice of foods. The salon with the fireplace was a comfortable space for relaxing after hikes.

Gabriel and Jorge, the hosts, can create an atmosphere of being welcome, of being home - not being client XYZ… The suites/apartments have roughly the size of a big hotel room (including a nice bathroom in the rocks), but with a big terrace facing the sea. The mattresses are of good quality so the basis for a good sleep is ensured. The kitchen (which is part of the room) has a single ring (induction) and a microwave - enough to prepare a breakfast, but not a full-fledged dinner. But there are enough nice restaurants in Calheta centre or… one can book a meal prepared by Gabriel, who is not only a great host but also an excellent chef. It was really a wonderful time we had at this place, thanks Gabriel and Jorge!

The property has a great view of the ocean and everything you need for a comfortable stay. We were 2 families with kids and stayed there for 7 days. Everything was perfect! The location is very close to the calheta beach with lot of restaurants and we could relax there almost every evening after our day trips.

Spacious cottage with 2 bedrooms with double beds and a sofa bed upstairs. There was everything we needed for our family of 4. Walking distance to the beach- that was just wonderful! We rented a car and spent half day exploring the island and half day relaxing on the sand beach and swimming in the ocean. The local supermarket is great as well. They sell fresh fish which is just amazing.

Calhetta itself is small and the main part of it centres...

Calhetta itself is small and the main part of it centres around the harbour. As you might expect this means that all the major activities are boat-based such as whale and dolphin watching, sailing, fishing, excursions etc. but there are also lots of restaurants and bars overlooking the harbour where you can get a great meal - especially if you like fish - or just relax for the evening and watch the sunset.

If you are going to stay here, be sure to have a car so that you can explore the island. The Fish Factory is a wonderful restaurant a short walk from the property and the local bakery is highly recommended too.

The house is ideal for a longer stay and offers everything you need. The kitchen is equipped with high-quality appliances, including a dishwasher, microwave, and stove, making cooking a pleasure. Outside, there is a grill, and there are even spices, coffee, sugar, tea, and dishwasher tabs available – simply great! There was really nothing we missed. The same goes for the bathroom and the bedroom, which is furnished with bed linens and extra blankets. Particularly noteworthy is the heating, which is not always standard in Madeira. Since we were there in February and the weather was not optimal, the heating was a real lifesaver, as we had already arrived with a flue. The house is located on a hill, so a car is definitely necessary, but the view is breathtaking. Georgiana was an excellent host. Upon our arrival, the kitchen table was set with gifts, ranging from sweets to Madeira wine. She checked in with us daily to see how we were doing and if we needed anything. Overall, we had a very pleasant two-week stay and can warmly recommend the house to anyone interested.

The west side of the island is much more authentic and less commercial/crowded than the region around Funchal. it's definitely worth visiting if you like nature and meeting the local people. There are small local shops ( Zig-zag for instance) and bars where we can discuss with the people from the island ( who are not there just for the holidays but all year long). There are cattle everywhere, it's really nice.

calheta is a beautiful area,for walking and exploring and has a sandy beach on the harbour front, with restaurants along the harbour front. one lovely restaurant called fontes do horachio is extremly nice and does week day plate of the day but this is futher inland and worth the trip. the bus service is good but a car is very handy.

Calheta was a lovely little town and the beach was amazing, The local residents were lovely and everybody did so much to make us feel welcome. The Supermarket had everything we need. The parking on the main street was busy but we always found a space. There is a multi storey car park on the harbour end that is less busy.

This was such a great place to stay - the house is nicely furnished, very clean, spacious & cozy, with a terace with a sea view, the kitchen is well equipped & the hosts were super nice - we found a bottle of Madeira, a honey cake, some eggs, potatoes, lemon & onion - great to make a quick dinner without having to run to a supermarket, that was so nice :) It's a short drive to Calheta beach & other places of interest. We highly recommend :0

Everything! The views , the surrounding nature. The helpful hosts. The added touch of a bag of fresh bread for each pod every morning. Great location for exploring the south of the island , although in all honesty the north is equally as accessible from Calheta. Calheta itself has a lovely beach and promenade area with a good variety of restaurants with chilled beach vibes. The kids loved the pool on site ❤️

It was a great choice to stay in Chalé Esmeralda in Calheta for two weeks. Good location(next to nice sandy beach, 30 min. by car from Funchal), tidy apartment, washing machine was a big plus. It was amazing surprised about atention of host when I arrived. Thanks for that! Everytime we found good solutions for each other about everything. Big thanks, Esmeralda, I was happy there!:)

The house was equipped with everything we needed for our stay and more. Nicely surprising were the basic spices, the variety of pots and pans in the kitchen, laundry room, and even items for the bbq in the yard, which we didn't have the time to use. The location was perfect, just 5 min by car from the beautiful Calheta beach. Beautiful view of the ocean and the neighbouring houses.
