I was running a Motorcycle course in Whanganui on the Saturday and wanted a peaceful and relaxing time with somewhere safe to park my motorbike overnight. The accommodation and peace and quiet was absolutely perfect. I was unable to meet the hosts as we were ships passing in the night. Sarjeant Gallery and café are well worth a visit. The café salads were delicious & different and very well priced. Have recommended to others since then. Durie Hill elevator also a worthwhile & fun activity.

So much to see. The architecture is beautiful.

So much to see. The architecture is beautiful. Old buildings lovingly painted in pastel colours , a superb playground for the children , a paddle steamer riverboat which cruises the Whanganui river . A very pretty city with lots to enjoy. Great art shops and the best farmers markets ever . Fab restaurants to name a few The Rutland Arms , and the Castlecliff cafe/restaurant “The Citadel”.

I love Whanganui and have always enjoyed my time there — I...

I love Whanganui and have always enjoyed my time there — I have family in the area. Momiji was a lovely place to go for dinner, and Caroline’s Boatshed is always a favourite for a meal. The Saturday market is also a great place to visit and never disappoints.

Beautiful river city.

Beautiful river city. You can bike safely along designated roads or try the mountain bike parks. You can surf at the local beach. Gardens are magic, and the town bustles. Fab cafes all over. Brilliant arts centre, local artists everywhere, and the Sarjeant Art Gallery is sublime. Try the Riverside Markets Kowhai Park also, is a fantastic spot for young and old, to play and picnic. Easy to get around the city.

A bit off the normal tourist track - but well worth the stop over. Great coffee and toasties at Franks restaurant. Lovely Main Street to look at the shops. A large variety of antique shops. The river is very nice to walk along as well.

The Whanganui Museum and the Sergeant Gallery are both worthy of extended visits, they are a highlight for any visitor to the area. The small arts and crafts galleries are interesting and innovative; some very fine and quirky cafes enrich the experience - for any visitor, Whanganui is now one of the most satisfying cultural locations in NZ.

I stayed at Shurinji one night after my flight from Nelson to Wellington on my way to the Tongariro Nationalpark. It felt like a home away from home and was like being part of a family (the two cuddly dogs included) :-) The garden is extraordinary and beautiful. Andrew and Penny took great care of me (I was having trouble with my back) and also gave me some tips what to do around Whanganui (Bushy Park for example was a great tip to see some NZ birds up close). So, a great and beautiful place to stay.

This is by far the best place I have stayed in Whanganui. The unit is immaculate, the bed is comfortable and the kitchen has everything you need. The grounds are also lovely, quiet and serene. To top it off you also have the nicest hosts you could hope for. Murray and Steph are friendly, respectful and kind. I strongly suggest that if Harakeke is available you book it immediately and don't risk letting this gem get away.

Highly recommend staying at David and Abbey's air bnb sanctuary when visiting Whanganui. Their unit breathes a welcoming vibration and allows for an extremely comfortable stay. Nice and private away from any city noise yet close enough to town to enjoy the cities vibrancy without being too much of a stretch. The hosting is world class
