New hotel with clean rooms, nice big bed and near the ocean. The bathroom is good and clean. Parking is on site. The kitchen is in the room, everything is new and convenient. We enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is brand new, we had a huge and very comfortable room. We arrived on a Wednesday and they served a huge paella for all the guests. The food à la carte was very cheap and everythinf was delicious. The were super sweet dogs who would come around for pets :)

We had a wonderful stay. The hotel is really clean (I consider myself quite demanding in this regard). The kitchen was well equipped. Just keep in mind that the local shops are not that well supplied, so better arrive with some essentials if you want to cook. The hotel is not directly at the beach, but I think it is really not necessary since it is super close anyway. This is a super calm spot that is a little remote. So yes there might be some power outages (we had 2 during our 5 days stay for 1-2 hours), but no problem at all. The garden chill zone is great.

We had a wonderful stay at Casa Baloo, the best hotel we’ve stayed at in Mexico so far. From the warm welcome by Lucy, it was clear that everything here is done with great care and attention to detail. The whole property is impeccably maintained, from the beautiful pool area to the rooms, and there’s even a rooftop with views over the lagoon. We stayed in the spacious family room. It was nicely decorated and had a well-equipped small kitchen (induction plates!), which was ideal for us. We could prepare snacks for the beach for our daughter, there was even Tupperware. Breakfast was served in a lovely garden area under palm trees and included fresh juice or coffee, fruit with granola, and every day a different selection of sweet and savory pastries. You can also order more from the menu. We tried the omelet and pancakes, both delicious. Before booking, I was a bit unsure about the location, since the hotel seemed to be at the edge of town. But actually, it turned out to be perfect: about a 4-minute walk to the beach, 10 minutes to the town center with supermarkets and coffee shops, and close to the kite-surfing area and several beachside restaurants to the east. There are also plenty of great restaurants nearby. We loved El Cuyo. It’s a relaxed, lovely, and very safe beach town with an amazing beach, perfect for kite-surfing lovers, families, and travelers who enjoy nature, a serene atmosphere, and laid-back beach vibes. There are no clubs, loud bars, or beach clubs. Lucy provided beach towels, chairs, and a parasol, although it was too windy for us to use it. The sea got in the afternoon a bit rough, I was glad we brought a children’s swim vest. We stayed five nights, but it felt too short. In hindsight, we would have skipped Río Lagartos and stayed longer in El Cuyo. We actually saw more flamingos here than on the tour there (in December, but in the breeding season this could be different).

Very quiet, sleepy beach village with such a calming atmosphere, all the food was amazing, the beach was stunning. Ideal for totally switching off and recharging not the place if you want nightlife after 10pm. Can easily walk everywhere and don’t need any transport.

I had very high expectations for the place, and it is nice, but I think I was expecting something different. The road really influenced my perception of the place — driving there is literally nerve-racking. For an hour and a half, my heart was racing as I kept looking for the next pothole because the road is in terrible condition. Without a doubt, you could end up with a broken car at any moment. This was a very stressful part of the trip. The beach had a lot of trash everywhere, and the smell of the water wasn’t pleasant. I had a nice time overall, but I would very hardly return after the adventure it takes to get in and out through that road.

This gem of a seaside village is my go to place to get away.

This gem of a seaside village is my go to place to get away. I love the fact that there are few foreign tourists and you get to experience a more genuine local culture. Although generally very safe during the day, make sure you lock up well at night and I recommend you find a private parking lot. I love the fact that the beach (all public - there are no private beaches in Mexico) is unpretentious without all the fuss (and charges) you get on the Riviera Maya. Local families just bring their umbrellas (or makeshift shade with old coconut leaves), their coolers, loudspeakers, dogs, and spend the whole day (from 6 am to 7pm or later). The beach is relatively quiet as groups are spread out and there's plenty of space. If you walk for 10 - 15 minutes on the beach you will find areas with no one in sight. The pier is a great place to sit and watch the sunset. It's a great place to rest and take long strolls on the beach far from the maddening crowds. You also won't find overpriced souvenir and crafts peddlers. I am disappointed that they don't serve a larger variety of seafood dishes in restaurants. All you find in most places are prawn, octopus and fish ceviches and if you don't eat lemon, you're in a pickle. This time I found some fresh oysters (small but tasty) but would have loved to have had some chargrilled fish or fresh clams. I guess there's just not enough demand. There are a few options though, including some vegan / vegetarian places.

El Cuyo is a small fishing village 3 hours from Playa del Carmen on the Gulf of Mexico. It is an adorable place with friendly locals and the beach is amazing. The only negative thing is that food is on the more expensive side for a small town and the roads to get there have potholes and lots of topos as you go through the little towns through the jungle. Better not to drive it at night.

I loved the beach, the only thing I didn't like is that people don't have the education to put the garbage in its place. This way you find garbage in any space on the beach, you step on lids, bags and this is very ugly since soon The boardwalk will look unpleasant.

El Cuyo is a small sleepy town with a just few hotels and no crowds. There's no shopping or night life. What you do find there, however, is quite a few restaurants and cafes that offer amazing local food. What else? Rent a bike to toot around for a day, go fishing with a local guide, take kite surfing lessons, or just lay on the beach and listen to the waves. If you are looking for a tranquil escape from your busy life, this is your kind of place.
