Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!
I travel frequently. Fez, and Morocco in general, is underwhelming. While several day trips are possible, the main attraction in Fez is the Medina. It is interesting to walk through it but after a few hours I had enough. You cannot enter most attractions (Mosques, University) so you're left wandering the Medina. The shops are diverse in terms of merchandise but they are overly aggressive and often rude.

I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased.
I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased. I love this city and it has a special place in my heart. I learned Arabic here over 20 years ago, I came back some years later and worked as an English teacher and Arabic to English translator, and my recent visit was a visit for the peace of my soul.
If you are going to visit with a family, I would recommend an apartment in the new city (la Ville Nouvelle), especially the two that I stayed in. The old city (the Medina) is not easy to navigate with a stroller and the facilities in the riyads there are not family friendly (unless you are willing to pay top dollar), to say the least. Staying in the Medina means roughing it, so if you're young and single, or a young couple with no children, maybe you can hack it.
For food, I highly recommend Jawhara Cafe next to the American Language Centre (Rue Ahmed Hiba) for breakfast (great harsha, malawi, coffee, tea etc.) and Restaurant Florence on Rue Hassan II for lunch or dinner; they make amazing couscous, tagine, and every great Moroccan dish at great prices.

What an amazing city - filled all the senses .. such warm hospitality, amazing food and history abounds - the artisans and craftsmanship of the local people was astounding - I loved every minute during my stay from the getting lost in the Medina's alley's to exploring the historic city - My tour guide Hassan was magnificent - so spoiled by all his knowledge and ability to read his customers.... We so enjoyed all his recommendations and more importantly - all the knowledge he shared with us - Please make sure you allocate enough time in this beautiful city and enjoy the hidden Roads and their restaurants! The food and spices are simply amazing!

Fez is good just for a day and it’s good to go to chefchouien from there for a day trip. Be careful of the people who take you to the tanneries and local outlets where they overcharge for stuff. The Medina has lots of shops having cheaper stuff of similar quality so better to check in different places before buying. Food is very good everywhere. Taxis are cheap. Place is very safe.

just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time.
just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you
It was a perfect stay in the hotel, the service is more than amazing ! we were very happy in the our stay in Riad Haj Palace, in our opinion its the best place in Fes city.
It's also in the center of Medina where everything is nearby,
I was looking for a place to print my tickets and In the reception they just helped us in everything,
for the next day our flight was too early morning and the offers us to prepare the breakfast to take a way.
The room is nice and big, you can have a lunch, dinner and spa there also.
Thank you
The location : you are in the oldest part of the medina and it's easy to find your way to the riad.
The rooms are decent size, actually comfortable size if you are 2. We ordered diner and while we though 15 euro per person was expensive, this was actually the best dinner we have had in Morocco. You would pay much more in Marrakesh for touristic place food which is crap.
The manager was friendly. He came to pick me from the train station which was great because you can overpay as a tourist.
Riad Idrissy was my most favourite Riad in my entire trip travelling around Morocco. The Riad is absolutely beautiful. It is beautifully maintained and in a great part of the medina. The staff were wonderful and friendly and made our stay even better. The food at the restaurant was amazing and the cooks were lovely. I would highly recommend this riad and will stay here for a much longer time if I visit Fes again. I absolutely loved the place, and it made our stay in Fes memorable.
Wonderful hotel with great service. The staff is so friendly and helpful. We were a large group of 3 families, each with 3 kids, so certainly were not easy guests. But the staff was always friendly, so nice to the kids, and helped us whenever we needed help. The Riad is one of those beautiful palaces you would never expect from the outside. Stairs and rooms can be small, though, but this is normal if you want to stay in the medina of Fes. The breakfast was so delicious!
We had a wonderful stay here. The riad is beautiful, in a calm street right next to the road, so it is quiet but easily accessible by taxi and a short walking distance from all the attractions in the medina. The breakfast was very good. Mohsim was the perfect host. He made us feel very welcome and helped us with everything we needed. The tours he arranged for us were great and the mint tea he served us was the best we had during our stay in Morocco.
The staff were really helpful with everything we needed in out first stay at Fès. They were open, patient and had great solutions every time. Food was delicious and yes you NEED a guide when you are in Fès if it is your first time. The Medina is huge and complicated to navigate compared to other places in Morocco, but it is such a great experience. Once in the hotel there is no noise, it's like a little oasis with its old architecture. Really cool.
Beautifully done decor inside and outside the rooms. It is a very comfortable stay with AC, hot water. Location is pretty great too with the Dar being right outside the medina. The best part is the staff. We had the pleasure of meeting Aziz, Abdel, and Munir who always pointed us in the right direction with any questions about fes and the medina. Breakfast had a variety and hosts go above and beyond to accomodate diet restrictions when possible.
We stayed in Fes at the start of April, and have been travelling since, hence the delay. The hotel was an experience, from the delicious breakfast, to the welcome with mint tea, to the extraordinary Hammam spa but most of all the wonderful staff. The location was brilliant for anyone with a car, we parked just outside in a quiet street that terminated at the hotel. We arrange a guide and taxi to the Medina, Rachid our guide was wonderful.
Riad Fes Maya was such a unique and beautiful place to stay during our time in Fes. The tilework and design detail in the common areas were gorgeous and very well-preserved. The hotel staff was very friendly and even surprised us with a complimentary tour guide that took us around the medina. Added bonus that the hotel has a hammam and offers massages which were much needed after a long day of exploring the city!
Said it was perfect host, he recommend us place to visit and put in on Google maps, make a survey that we must to go, so we don't need a guide. Recommended us best restaurant that we eat in Maroc. Riad are very beautiful and have everything you need. Breakfast very tasty and we heard birds that are sing, it was like in heaven. Parking is near Riad, Medina 5 minutes walking. Perfect location to visit Fes.
Breakfast was exceptional and it felt more like being treated in a Michelin Star Restaurant. Very much impressed with the quality of food and presentation. The entire Riad is exceptionally beautiful with emphasis on privacy and never felt being in a hotel. Got upgraded to Calife Suite with private patio. No doubt, the best place to stay in the entire Medina of Fes !!! Rooftop bar was definitely a treat.
I think it was the best riad in Morocco we’ve been! beautiful place near the center of Medina, very clean. lovely, helpful and very welcoming people working here - we appreciated your service! we loved our stay in Riad Letchina. if we ever come back to Fes, we definitely will stay in this place. I wish you guys all the best and a lot of guests! you deserve it! :)
Mourad made our stay at Faracha Fes so memorable & comfortable. He went way beyond our expectations and thanks to his advice and help, we really enjoyed our stay in Fes. He is one of the highlights of our Morocco trip, and we wished we could stay longer at Faracha Fes. Highly recommend this facility (the narrow path to the hotel is def a bonus)!!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. They accommodated an extension to our stay. The roof terrace is great and gives amazing views of Fes. A great place to relax and read. The breakfast was impressive, the best we had in Morocco. The rooms were clean and with comfy beds. Would recommend this hotel.
Abderrachman is a great host he will do anything he can to make you have the best stay.
The location is superb! Not to far from the main road but inside the old Medina! Breakfast was one of the best ones we had so far on our roundtrip in morocco.
Everything was very clean an hygienic.
Really nice hotel in the medina of Fes. It has lavish moroccan tiles and decoration. It was close to touristic landmarks and good restaurants. The owner Mohamed is very friendly, helpful and has good local knowledge that you need as a visitor. I recommend you stay here in Fes.
Doha she is going always the best lady that we have meet in Morocco she is really friendly and helpful i can’t explain how she take care of us and give us a lots of information about fez and Morocco and she was organized a trip to the desert which is a memorable experience
The hotel was a very short walk into the medina and was close to everything I needed. The Staffel were very friendly and helpful. They also provided good advice on what to do in Fes.
Best part of the stay in Fes! In the Old City, quite close to the Medina and surrounding attractions. Beautiful place & amenities. Loved it. Absolutely loved the helpful staff.
