Thambu Illam is a lovely, atmospheric colonial villa in a quiet area of Jaffna. Our double room was simple, but comfortable and there were plenty of areas outside the room - verandahs, garden, interior patio - to sit and relax. Even though the guesthouse doesn't have its own kitchen, the food we ordered through the guesthouse and which the staff served in an open pavillion by the swimming pool was delicious and authentically Sri Lankan. We'd also like to highlight the wonderful treatment we received from the helpful and attentive staff. Among other things, they arranged several tuk tuk rides for us with the incredible Prasath, as well as onward transport.

I loved my stay at the Thinnai (and Jaffna overall, it’s a shame that people skip this place). There was a small miscommunication about take away breakfast, but they sincerely apologised and made up for it with a surprise from the kitchen. Breakfast is also very nice and I definitely recommend the Odiyal Kool which tasted amazing!

It was absolute bliss. We were three couples travelling together and we had the entire house to ourselves. The bedrooms were super clean and the beds were very comfortable. The staff (especially Janakan) were incredibly attentive, lovely and made everything work beautifully. There really was nothing we lacked. The breakfast prepared by Mihla was delicious and so personal. If you are looking for an intimate and local experience then I couldn’t recommend this enough. If you prefer big hotels with a resteraunt/breakfast buffet then I think the other Jetwing in Jaffna is probably more for you.

The rooms were clean. The staff was nice and very flexible. They tried to accommodate all my requirements. I checked in very early because my bus arrived at Jaffna at 6 am and they allowed me to check in immediately. The restaurant was clean and the food was good. The Wi-Fi speeds were good. The location is 5 mins walk from Jaffna town, but still in a quiet neighbourhood. The hotel has space available for limited number of vehicle parking as well. They have a backup generator on standby, which is a bit loud for me as my room was close to it.

A slightly different experience to rest of the island but a positive one. However it was more dirty than other large towns and cities, rubbish is everywhere! The Dutch fort is the best experience, a place worth visiting. Driving down to the islands is a nice experience and much calmer atmosphere from main Jaffna city. The views of the ocean is great but the coastline is filled with plastic bottles, general refuse and redundant fishing gear. I would not want to wonder around barefoot but this applies to most of the srilankan cost line that I have visited... sadly..

We enjoyed visiting the Nallur temple, fish market and fishing village and especially the excursions around the Jaffna peninsula and the nearby islands. August is a great month to be in Jaffna, as there are temple festivals all around, with music and rituals. For a nice cold beer and some snacks, the Machang bar / restaurant - near the modern North Gate Hotel - is highly recommended. For a mid-morning snack, the old-fashioned Malayan café near the busy market is a great place where time seems to have stood still. Food is served on fresh banana leaves - which are thrown away in the 'banana leaf throwing station'. For a decent evening meal, head to the Valampuri restaurant - in the hotel of the same name. You'll be surrounded by lots of Sri Lankan family groups.

"Jaffna is a truly impressive city—very clean, peaceful, and notably low on traffic. We had a wonderful stay at the North Gate Hotel, situated right next to the railway station. What surprised and delighted us most was the spotless condition of the Jaffna Railway Station. In our experience, railway areas are typically the dirtiest, but the excellent maintenance here created a lovely and quiet environment right outside our hotel. Our sincere thanks to the Railway Master for setting such a high standard! We absolutely loved our visit and look forward to returning."

Jaffna is still an unspoiled and hidden gem of a city.

Jaffna is still an unspoiled and hidden gem of a city. People are super friendly and the city is bustling and easy to navigate. There is a beech just outside the city center which is quiet and beautiful. It was very hot when we visited in july but we did not mind this at all.

Jaffna is lovely city and it’s a shame we didn’t stay longer. It has changed a lot since our last visit 7 years ago with a lot more development but a shame so many franchises have opened up. It has a nice mix of tourist attractions and yet maintains its charm as a local area. The Rio ice cream is the best! I wish we had more time to enjoy local cuisine.

Booked Jaffna Heritage Hotel for a short stay in Feb 2023. We had to check in during the very early hours of the day as we used public transport to reach Jaffna. Hotel Manager Wijekumara was very responsive and attentive from the moment we booked the hotel until we checked out. He made sure that everything(room/access and other amenities) was nicely arranged for us. We were quite surprised and very well impressed to see such wonderful service from the Manager and staff. Thank you so much Wije and hopefully, will be visiting in the future.

A very nice hotel in the heart of Jaffna, yet in a quiet location. The rooms are nice and spacious and consist of a living area and a bedroom. The restaurant is highly recommended. It serves very authentic and delicious regional cuisine. The staff is very accommodating, and Dinesh, in particular, gave us a lot of additional information. The hotel is good value for money, and we ate in the restaurant every evening and tried many dishes on the menu. The pool and gym are cleaned daily, and everything is very tidy.

Lovely place. Well located close to the city centre, railway station and main temple. Allen was a gracious and knowledgeable host, very attentive and friendly. We really enjoyed our stay here as the location is so convenient and Allen was so kind and generous. This homestay was the best we stayed at in SL and Jaffna was by far the most interesting city.
