Beautiful Ryokan in the area of Gero Onsen. We couldn't use the private onsen as it needs to be reserved in advance, however the public one was very good and we were lucky enough to have it all to ourselves in the evening. Exceptional multi-course dinner and breakfast with very good service. Convenient private parking right in front of the place. Very spacious and clean traditional ryokan room. Extremely kind and helpful staff. This was the best accomodation in our whole 3-weeks Japan trip!

LOVED THIS ACCOMODATION it felt like switching off and going back in time The staff are amazing and so hard working and the location is stunning. I found the traditional futon a bit uncomfortable to sleep on but it was nice to try out for a night the fact that the doors to the private onsen open up so you can enjoy the breeze and scenery is wonderful as is their shuttle service

Where do I start. I could not say ありがとうございます! enough Keko and her husband were the most hospitable family we have ever experienced. Top notch in all regards and absolutely no complaints at all. It is so comforting to stay here almost as if you’re at your grandmas house. There was conversation flowing all day and night despite our lack of Japanese knowledge. Keko was genuinely interested in both our lives and travels and through google and broken Japanese we were able to tell her all about it. If you are staying in the area this is a must do!!! More than a stay, it’s an experience you will never forget. WE LOVE YOU KEKO!!!

Quick look: The room was really nice and big, the food was great, and the staff was so nice. The outdoor hot spring was my favorite. It was like a slice of nature to enjoy while you soaked. I found the best hours to go were just before 4pm and in the morning after breakfast. There weren't a lot of people then. My room had a great view of the river and when I went to eat, the Kansui restaurant had a fantastic view of the outside garden (which you can also walk around in). I really liked that I could hear the river from my room. I stayed for two nights. The food was different both evenings and both mornings but all delicious. The staff that served it took care of everything like turning on the burners and serving you rice and tea. It really allowed you to focus on eating and enjoying the scenery. It's a lot of food, but all healthy and worth trying, especially if you're new to Japan. I think the staff spoke English too, if you need the English support. All around, it was a really great place. Amazing value and just so peaceful.

Gero has so much to share, with food, including Hida beef, yes get familiar with it. It's top level Wagyu beef and is from Hida the region that Gero is situated. The city is easy to get around in the snow (in Winter) and in the rain (in Spring), with places that are easy to walk or ride share to. Gero to most is a journey to get to with taking the trains, but it's well worth the journey, having seen cherry blossoms in the ever greens AND the snow falling like in a "snow globe", encrusting the tress, during the train ride. We are fortunate to have experienced Gero twice and now looking for a third stay, in Autumn for the changing of the leaves!

Gero is a gorgeous town in the valley in Gifu. There is a much slower pace here, incredibly friendly people. and beautiful nature. There's many nooks and crannies where you'll find interesting things, and the Gassho-mura open-air museum village is a must-see area.

I did a one day trip, I went there just because of the naturals onsen, and it was the best decision, I arrived about 10:00 at leave at the same time of the next day. Honestly I don't think is a trip for more than 3 days. Gero is a beautiful city, it has a few museums that can be seen in one period of the day. As the city is small, it doesn't need car or bus to go around if no one has fiscal disabilities. This was my second time at Japan, and I regret not going to Gero the first time as well.

Gero Onsen (Japanese: 下呂温/げろおんせん) is an onsen (hot spring)...

Gero Onsen (Japanese: 下呂温/げろおんせん) is an onsen (hot spring) located in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. Hayashi Razan considers it, along with Arima Onsen and Kusatsu Onsen, to be one of Japan's three most famous hot springs. Gero Onsen is known for its various health benefits: The hot springs in Gero gush from the ground at temperatures reaching 84 degrees Celsius, making them truly natural hot springs. The water is slightly alkaline, simple in composition, colorless, and transparent, accompanied by a light and gentle fragrance. A light application to the skin leaves it silky smooth. Its therapeutic effects have also attracted medical attention, leading to the establishment of spas using the hot springs for treatment, as well as a hot spring medical research institute, and more.

Nothing interesting to do in Gero.

Nothing interesting to do in Gero. It's known for its onsen accommodations, but having a house tub (not a hydrojet) is much better because they're made of concrete. It's very easy to get to Gero, and most accommodations offer transportation from the bus terminal to the hotel. There were no food options at the accommodation; I wouldn't go back to Gero.

Our stay at this ryokan in Gero, Gifu, was truly memorable. The stunning garden, adorned with vibrant autumn leaves, set a serene tone from the moment we arrived. The traditional Japanese architecture added a timeless charm, while the in-room onsen, boasting breathtaking views, was pure luxury. The recent expansion with a new annex gave the facility a unique maze-like layout, which turned exploring the ryokan into an unexpectedly delightful adventure. Highly recommended for anyone seeking relaxation with a touch of tradition and charm!

It was one of my best stays in Japan! The hosts (an older marriaged couple) are so so cute and lovely! It feels like family. They are so friendly and brought me to the Gandate Park (there are a lot of waterfalls) and the hot spring. The area around the guesthous is really quiet and there is not much to do. I liked to relax a bit and calm down at this place. There is a Lawson near to the guesthouse and you have a direct bus to Takayama and Gero Onsen.

The staff were friendly and helpful. They have English speaking staff that gave good explanation of the process and recommendations. The food was amazing, beautifully presented and delicious. The hotel is slightly on the older side but still maintained quite well and clean. We could clearly see the river from our rooms so no false advertising there. The onsen was comfortable and clean as well.
