The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic.
The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic. It wasnt crowded, lessons for kids and adults were AUD$55 for 4 hours, lifts were @4$ per lift. Gear hire was AUD$65 for 2 days PP. In Australia lift passes are $250 per day alone. The hotel Sailor Hutte was literally at the base of the ski lifts. Food was cheap ($10-14 per meal) booze was cheap ($3.50 for a beer). The guys at the Hotel Sailor Hutte were great, make an effort to chat with them via your translator app. Its worth it. One more thing, I would recommend buying Shinkansen tickets directly from JR East rail online. Heaps cheaper than buying a seven day pass unless you are planning to spend 7 days on the train. FYI there are 3 Shinkansen companies East, Central and West. They have there own websites a bit clunky in English but it works. Good luck.KieranAustralia - 10Scored 10
Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture.
Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture. There are many places to visit and things to do. We rented a car and I believe this is a must if you want to sight see and time is an issue for you. By car from Yamagata train station, Zao Onsen is about 40-50 minutes away, Ginzan Onsen an hour, Yamadera about 20-30 mins. If you are into photography, there are many great landscape photos you can take here.

Not very famous place for travelingas not much to see in the city. If you could have a car or rent one, could go more places. Basically in Yamagata prefecture, public transportation doesn't cover much as it is not a prefecture mainly for sightseeing though there are several nice places to go.

Yamagata is ideal as a base to get to Zao Onsen and Ginzan Onsen. There are bus and train connections to these two incredibly beautiful places. We also took the train through beautiful mountainous countryside to the coast to Matsushima, one of the three most beautiful places in Japan. Climbing 1100 steps at Yamadera was exhausting but so worth it when you saw the view over the valley. This area seems to be undiscovered by western tourists yet.MichaelAustralia

The staff is incredible, the atmosphere at the place is fantastic, thanks to the shared dinner offered almost every night. Even the fact that it's 15 minute walk from the station is outweighed in my opinion by the fact that you get to pass by the extremely nice castle park on the way. The relax lounge with free coffee and water was something special, as well as the comfy homesuites you get. Something really funny was the waiter roboter which served the food, but you can always call a human waiter. I would reccomend this hotel and will definitely come back.

As a solo traveller or couple, if you are looking for a social/local experience with long nights of talking and sharing with the other guests, this is the perfect place.
