The location was perfect - right by the JR station and the ferry terminal. There are konbini and restaurants nearby too. The rooms were really nice and the bunk beds were also quite spacious. It was very clean. There is free coffee and tea in the dining area.

Despite being a ‘hotel’ - Keep this charm a very homely feeling. Host is super friendly and very accommodating. There are tables you can use for meals brought in from outside. A microwave is provided. Even has a public bath facility which is amazing for a pension. Parking just outside the Pension and parking is free! Wonderful to sleep and wake up with the sounds of waves crashing onto the beach.

Great hotel. The owners are extremely nice and helpful. They served a great diner (quantity and quality wise) even though I had not booked it in advance and even lent me a pair of shoes for the day, adapted to the abundant snow. The room and bathroom are simple but impeccably clean. If I go through Wakkanai again I will renew my stay there without hesitation.

I went to Wakkanai for two purposes.

I went to Wakkanai for two purposes. I wanted to see Cape Soya - the northernmost point in Japan. I ended up taking a taxi to get there which wasn't cheap. I also wanted to ride the train the entire length of Hokkaido and Wakkanai was the starting point. Unfortunately Wakkanai seems to be an economically depressed town.

We would like to stay another day or two in Wakkanai the next time we go and visit. As it was we spent less than an hour in Cape Soya, which was basically our main objective, the northernmost point in Hokkaido. We enjoyed the park near the Gate of Ice and Snow as well as the observation tower. The view of the city from that vantage point was very nice.

I rented a car and drove from Chitose Airport to Wakkanai.

I rented a car and drove from Chitose Airport to Wakkanai. Hokkaido is quite large and remote. However, the trip was truly impressive, with the vast plains, the beautiful starry night sky along the Orolong Line coastal road, and the chance to encounter wildlife. Next time I visit Wakkanai, I'll definitely fly from Chitose Airport. I also understand there's a highway bus from Sapporo City to Wakkanai.

I visited to take the Soya Bus Tenpoku-Souya-misaki Line.

I visited to take the Soya Bus Tenpoku-Souya-misaki Line. I took the Active Bus directly from the airport to Soya-misaki, and was able to see the scenery from the Soya Hills, which regular route buses don't pass through. The view from Soya-misaki was also amazing. There were many attractions in the city, such as the North Breakwater Dome and the Karafuto Memorial Museum. If you want to learn about the history of Karafuto and Wakkanai, I recommend the Karafuto Memorial Museum. It was also convenient to be able to check the schedule and purchase tickets for the route bus at the terminal at the station. The shops close early at night, but perhaps because of this, I saw Ezo deer roaming the town.

It's a stop on the way to northern Japan, especially Hokkaido, and Cape Soyo is a must-see. The town itself is as lively as any other Japanese town. However, it's worth seeing and exploring for those who are curious.

It's difficult to get around without a private vehicle.

It's difficult to get around without a private vehicle. The city is rather ugly, made up mostly of dilapidated prefabricated buildings, perhaps due to the rainy climate. The fish market and the hills are interesting. I recommend it only if you need to stop for the ferry.

I was walking across Japan when I got to stay here. The facilities were excellent and though I speak Japanese, they did have English instructions available for people who might not. There's not much in the surrounding towns, so be sure to bring food/drinks, but the location is so peaceful and relaxing. The staff were incredibly kind, and if I am ever in this part of Hokkaido again, I will definitely try to stay here.

Lovely stay at Wakkanai thanks to the two amazing and helpful hosts, Kiki and Yuji. All amenities are provided, the hosts will answer any questions you may have and you feel enough privacy even though you will be staying at their place. The sweet note and cookies in our room was really nice.
