It has been on my wish list, and we were there at the perfect time: Matsuri and cherry blossoms!! I liked that it was not a big city. Hikes in the mountains/hills would have been nice, and the Hida Village was a special feature.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

    We highly recommend a visit.

We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials. There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well. This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

The walk up to the castle ruins and Hida no Sato were two favorites, but there was so much to see and do while relaxing that I’d encourage people to take it easy and not try to hit everything. Spend time in your ryokan or hotel stay, and relax.

I cannot rate this place high enough. Has it's own onsen; rooms of the high standard you always get here; walking distance from the station; very central to the shops and markets. Staff recommended a bar for a quiet drink and "Tonio" turned out to be a great little watering hole. Tell the owner you're a Metallica fan and you've made a friend. Takayama was an overnight excursion for me, but this hotel, coupled with a delightful little town covered in snow, then a soak in the onsen, was a high point of my japan trip.

Reallyy, nothing to say.. this place so far have the best memory i got on a hotel, ryokan. I felt like iam in an old Japanese movie. They give Kimano for wear and daily they clean it, they clean all rooms. Very warm feeling. Very friendly owners. Lady Tomiye and her husband is amazing owners. Breakfast was amazing, if you are not full you can keep eating. Everything about this place is unforgettable. I felt like home. And also close to the city :) with 10 minute of walk you can reach old town.

Renovated by a hotel chain (Tabist), Kazeyuki offers a basic ryokan experience (without the meals) in the middle of the Japanese alps. The private baths were the highlight of our stay. If the baths were public, they could become a cluster and spread Covid. So I loved that this hotel provided the baths as private for guests in a first come first serve system. We could enjoy them with peace of mind. There are 4 baths available so there was always vacancy. The room was spacious and quiet.

Ryokan Asunaro went above and beyond my expectations. The food for dinner and breakfast were delicious. The room was beautiful and the onsen was so relaxing. not only that, they allowed me to keep my luggage there while I explored Takayama for the day and when I got back I asked them to call for a taxi so I could bring my luggage to my next hotel. Since all the taxi were busy, one of their staff drove me to my hotel (in Takayama.) I am so incredibly grateful. Highly recommend!

Takayama Ouan is the best hotel I've stayed in Japan. The place is beautiful and styled as a traditional hotel. Except for the reception you walk barefoot on clean and soft carpets in all the hotel. The rooms were much larger than average. From the open air SPA on the last floor you can gaze on Takayama mountain range. The breakfast was varied and top class and the evening there was free serving of handmade ramen. It is impossible for me to find even the slightest defect.

The hotel staff was very helpful and even bow when you walk past the staffs. There was 2 microbus per hour from the Takayama station to hotel. (5 minutes). The room (Japanese style room with tatami) was big enough for 2 people stay and very quiet. There was 2 onsens. A big one on the 1st floor and a smaller one in the basement. The breakfast had plenty of food, buffet style and you can choose to have western/Japanese meals.

Beautiful ryokan with both private and public onsen. The location was easy to get to from takayama via bus. We also visited local onsen outside the ryokan and visited a waterfall and did some trekking. The food was great and they arranged veggie which can be hard to find in japan. We also had a massage in our room which was quite the experience :) Staff very friendly and helpful.
