Kamigakure is a real treat to stay in and was one of the highlights of our holiday in Japan. The room is incredibly spacious, well equipped with everything you could possibly need. There were thoughtful touches throughout like local sweets each day and drinks in the fridge to keep you hydrated whilst using the private bath and sauna. Our room also had a projector and screen, which could be watched from bed and was a real treat when unwinding in the evening. The breakfast and dinner each day were exceptional using local fresh produce. I liked that there was a menu before eating, which told you everything you would receive during the meal. The portion sizes were also perfect for us. Not too much and not too little. Location to the gorge is perfect and was within walking distance (15-20 minutes) with Takachiho Shrine on the way. Also, recommend trying Marumoku Coffee in the village (check his opening times on Instagram first as they vary day to day). Would also recommend the karaage restaurant across the road from Takachiho Shrine. Both excellent. The staff were a real pleasure and asset to Kamigakure. Very welcoming and couldn't do more to help you have a comfortable stay. I would definitely stay here again and it has given me fond memories of my trip that I'll always remember. Could not recommend more.

Located in the town of Takachiho, with its dramatic gorge, shrines and nightly traditional dance performances, this moderately expensive ryokan features lovely gardens and excellent food. Our room was comfortable with a private outdoor hot spring bath with its own traditional garden. The hotel is owned and run by a family that makes sure that every detail is correct. They provided us with transport to the dance, which was good fun and, at our request, provided folding stools to sit on during the performance in place of having to sit on tatami mats.

Everything about my stay was amazing - the hosts were so lovely and hospitable (made me tea and breakfast, gifted me an umbrella, drove me to the bus station in the morning), and the room was great. Way bigger than a standard Japanese inn, and the bathroom had great amenities too. I enjoyed going to the local shrine, and sitting outside the hostel to enjoy the peaceful nature. I would love to stay again.

We arrived in Takachiho after a morning at Mt Aso.

We arrived in Takachiho after a morning at Mt Aso. When we arrived, we visited the gorge and did the walk from the free car park. Our boat ride was first thing the following morning but as we’d been the day before, we’d taken lots of photos and got the lay of the land. It made our morning very efficient as we were able to get on the road straight after our boat ride!

I loved Takachiho!

I loved Takachiho! It was such a quaint and local Japanese town. The surrounding mountains were beautiful and even accentuated by the downpour of rain I had on the first day. Visiting the gorge was a bucket list item and I was pleasantly surprised when I found the Amanoiwato Shrine to visit the following day.

We first visited Takachiho 14 years ago during March and decided to go back during a different season in October .The town has grown in size with a plush hotel and a local supermarket and getting around ismuch more easier . The only thing we would change would probably be the fun we had with the language barrier on our first visit . The Gorge is the main stay to the trip and we had the same reaction as last time that it blew us away again

Takachiho is about 1 hrs. 20 minutes drive from Kumamoto Airport and is easy to reach in a rental car. The scenery en route is amazing! The Gorge is stunning but not very long. The rowing boat trip is relatively expensive, ¥5100 for 30 minutes for a max of 3 people, but it is great fun with wonderful photo opportunities! You can walk some of the way along the river but part of the path is still damaged. There are several nice shrines in the area, one of which does nightly Kagura dance performances (1 hour for ¥1000). We stayed 2 nights in a lovely Ryokan at the end of our holiday and it was a great way to finiour trip to Japan.

The white and Japanese tourists visiting the shrine were well-liked, with a reasonable level of knowledge and good manners. However, the Chinese visitors to Takachiho Gorge were loud, families entered the pond without permission, and left trash wherever they wanted. They also had no manners, and many Chinese people rented cars and did not follow traffic laws, which was extremely dangerous. Their behavior was very noticeable, acting as if they owned the place. The poor manners of the Chinese tour conductors were also noticeable. It's fine to promote Japan as a tourism-oriented nation, but I think travel agencies should think about how much trouble they are causing to local residents. I have no desire to go to Takachiho Gorge again.

Very kind and smiling receptionist. A spacious room, comfy futon, with a wonderful view on the valley. Everything was very clean and calm. You can visit Amanoiwato Shrine by foot, its entrance is like 200-400 meters from the guest house and you can even see one of the torii doors from the window. It's better to come by car so you can visit Takachiho nearby.
