As the hotel is classified as a business hotel I expected a small but comfortable room as per the usual Japanese business hotel. However the twin room we were given was the biggest room I've experienced in Japan for this type of hotel! Even the toilet was spacious in comparison to many others I've come across in business hotels. The breakfast provided was buffet style and was of a high quality and very generous in the amount of food and variety provided. The location of the hotel was almost perfect being only 5 minutes walk from the station and 1 minute to a large supermarket. In addition all the sites to see were very close by. Being of larger Western body type I especially enjoyed the provision of a yukata size that actually fitted me well. Thanks New Palace!!

The room was lovely and comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful. They also have excellent service- I accidentally left my power bank behind and they very helpfully sent it to my next hotel within a couple of days. Would go again!

Location was excellent. Shared kitchen, microwave, kettle etc so you can self-cater with food from supermarket (next door). Very comfortable rooms with Japanese style bedding - new build so everything clean and modern. Hostess is lovely and communicates through a language translation app.

It’s a self-contained 1-room apartment, complete with kitchen and shower-room. All modern. Beautiful clean tatami floor and comfortable futons. Amazingly, as an extra welcome, the kitchen is stocked with a selection of local drinks (including Wakayama-produced saké). The owner met us on arrival, explained everything clearly. All in all, if i come back to Shingu i will definitely want to stay here again.

We had a lovely welcome even though it was a late check in, and he did very well with little English. Even though we were only staying one night, he made us feel very welcome and showed us all the property details. It was a short walk from the train station, with bikes available. The property itself is beautiful and we loved the traditional touches. He even left some Japanese snacks in the room for us. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you!!!!

The area is a good gateway to important Kumano Kodo spots. Moss House is a short walk from Miwasaki train station. The apartment has everything you need, the kitchen is well-equipped. It is clean and practical. There is space to park your car. But most importantly, Fumi-san who runs Moss House is a gracious and hospitable host. Her and her husband have been incredibly helpful and made us feel very welcome.

The facility is charming! It is a wooden cottage in the middle of mountains with beautiful view. There is a river just next by, so if you get there early, you can refresh yourself there. The rooms are spacious and there is a place you can hang your wet clothes. There is also a common space where you can hang out with other guests. I also used it when my room-mate wanted to sleep and I was still working on PC. Very useful and convenient. There's very well working Wi-Fi, as well. The dinner was delicious. We had seasonal steamed vegetable with rice. They have vegetarian (tofu) and non-vegetarian (meat dumplings) version. For breakfast there were toasts with cheese, jams, peanut butter, yogurt, fruit etc. You can also prepare a meal for your next journey. The beds are comfortable and you have great view from windows. The kitchen is very well equipped and you can use it if you need. You can make yourself coffee anytime, which I very appreciated. The staff was friendly and very helpful. She could speak Japanese, English and Spanish, which was quite fun because all the guests there could also speak Spanish for some reason. :-D

Shingu is a small coastal town with few hills which is a wonderful to find after 10 days hiking on the mountainous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walks. One of the 3 Great Shrines is here and very accessible whether walking or driving. Getting to and from Shingu is very easy with the train station and bus station being together in the center of town. It is a good base for reaching the other 2 Great Shrines of the Kumano Kodo at Hongu and Nachisan. There are a number of good eateries in the town but one of the joys was just wandering down laneways and discovering little gems not listed in the usual guides.

Shingu City is ideal for touring the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano). If you're traveling by train, it's easy to get there via Nagoya or Matsusaka. The tourist information center in front of Shingu Station offers 1-, 2-, and 3-day bus passes. The 1st day costs 3,000 yen (round trip to Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine) and the 2nd day costs 3,500 yen. This pass also includes access to Nachi, making it a great way to tour the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano). Shingu City is home to Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine, Kamikura Shrine, and castle ruins. Ojigahama Beach is a beautiful beach, known for its religious ceremonies and the nesting of sea turtles. Swimming is not permitted. The seafood was delicious, as was the Kumano beef. I had a delicious meal at an izakaya (Japanese pub) in front of Shingu Station, which also serves set meals. Despite being an izakaya, it was easy to get into.

It's surprisingly urban.

It's surprisingly urban. While staying in Kii-Katsuura or Nachi offers hot springs and the sea, Shingu is more convenient for touring. The bus is more convenient than I expected. I was wondering if it would take 90 minutes from Shingu to Hongu Taisha Shrine and cost 1,450 yen, but the driving technique and punctuality of the local bus driver speeding along the winding mountain roads, plus the beautiful, ever-changing views of the Kumano River, convinced me it was all included (lol). A couple of foreign tourists were glued to the window, looking genuinely happy.
