This was my second stay at Onn Nakatsugawa. Like the first time, I appreciated the location and the general feel of the place. Breakfast is recommended as well.

Small onsen on the first floor which is empty in the later hours, really good and various breakfast options, USB Ports at the bed. FamilyMart, KFC, McDonalds and a big grocery store are in walkable distance. You get a free drink, which is a very friendly gesture.

The hosts were exceptional and her English was excellent. The food was delicious and she took the time to explain everything. The town was beautiful and our room overlooked the Main Street. We slept so well because we could hear the rushing water all night.

It was in an old town. Peaceful and quiet. The house itself was unique as it operates as a cafe during the day.

The staff were extremely nice. Facilities were new and in perfect condition. It used to be a school that was completely renovated just before a school reform moved all the students to another prefecture.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious.
If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so!
It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it.
Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed.
It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.
This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

As previously reviewed, we are still annoyed that we had to argue at length with the staff (over half an hour) to have the sofa bed made up with linen. Their policy apparently is to only provide linen when there are 3 guests sharing the room advertised as 'Double Bed plus Sofa' and confirmed in writing via booking.com that I had booked a room with 2 beds. The hotel was demanding further payment otherwise my friend and I were expected to share the bed. They eventually agreed to make an exception. The air con unit also only had instructions in Japanese and we found it impossible to turn it down The room was very small and the aircon unit sounded all night as if we were flying in an airplane.

Nakatsugawa was a very pleasant town with an excellent shopping centre and good restaurants. Soba noodle seem to be a specialty in many. It was also a handy base for taking a bus to Magome for the Nakasendo Way walk to Tsumago and in the opposite direction to Ochiai, via the historic stone-paved 800m road.

Our primary reason for visiting was the walk from Magome to Tsumago. It's a lovely outing. Very enriching to see Japanese countryside after the big cities of central Honshu. The quality and restfulness of Iwasu-so was an unexpected delight.
This was my favorite hotel on this trip to Japan. Room was very comfy and had a great view from the 5th floor. Super clean and modern property. Shoes are left in lockers in reception area which keeps the carpets clean and footsteps quiet. Breakfast was included for me and there were lots of options in the buffet. Good location, about 10 minutes walking from train station and big grocery store. I used this as a base to hike sections of the Nakasendo Trail. Staff was very helpful and communicated well in English.
Large, traditional home with beautiful Scandinavian touches. We stayed in March, so the home was generally chilly, but the host provided many ways to find warmth - mini-splits, stoves, cozy down comforters. He was always helpful and cheerful. We had the whole place to ourselves, so the experience was like living in Japan long ago. Interesting little town, with friendly townsfolk and host. We had both supper and breakfast in town, and were sad to leave.
What a fantastic stay we had!!! Keiko is a fantastic host, who cooks like a dream. Our favourite stay of our 3 weeks in Japan. The room we had was spacious and spotless. We walked to Tsumago and got the bus back so stayed 2 nights rather than doing baggage transfer. Use Nakatsugawa train station and get the bus to Magome Cannot recommend this place enough.
The location in Magome was incredible, the meals were incredible, and the owners very kindly changed our reservation to three people on the spot after I mistakenly booked for two! We loved our stay and would love to go back. Also - we were traveling with one vegetarian who was well fed at dinner and breakfast - this was sometimes hard to find in Japan.
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful part of the town, right on the Nakasendo Trail. Convenient parking. So much charm and character and the staff were lovely and super helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both amazing - definitely recommend getting these! Very comfy futon and pillow, decent sizeroom with large cupboard for bags.
It was traditional, but with modern comforts and efficiency! Everything was well-thought out, and the space well-designed. Lots of details added to make each room comfortable and aesthetically-pleasing! Also - the futon was so comfortable it was the first good-night’s sleep we had in Japan!
Spacious apartment with our own kitchen and extremely comfortable futons (best of our trip by far!). Though there is no food available there, they were proactive in making us a dinner reservation in town. Host even hand delivered our luggage to our next hotel in Tsumago.
Well looked after. A business style hotel, but, as a foreign tourist visiting over new year, the staff made sure I had what I needed to do some hiking and where to eat. The onsen, a daily ritual for many domestic visitors, was a treat. Helpful and kind.
The food was really the winner of this stay - the best traditional Japanese food we’ve had on our trip. Also the location was perfect and everything was very neat and clean. It definitely exceeded my expectations being a 1-star hotel/ryokan.
The location was easily walkable from the train station. I was surprised that the exterior of the hotel was fairly modern (as I didn’t expect that) and the room was comfortable. The staff were very helpful and breakfast was sufficient.
Great location, very warm and cosy. We enjoyed being able to chat with other travellers in the lounge area and during breakfast. The ability to get a meal reservation via the hotel was super helpful in this small village.
I really enjoyed my stay here, its normal old-style japanese family house so staying here was unique experience different from hotels. Also owner was very friendly and even drove me to the supermarket :-)
we loved this place, old building in beautiful old part of town, solo occupancy, living room with outlook over koi pond, good supermarket a few blocks away, great restaurant across the road.
Hotel staff were really nice, facilities were clean and it's all within a 3 min walk from the station. We stayed in a classic japanese room which is always a good thing in my book...
Fantastic beds - really comfortable. Got a great night’s sleep. Water pressure in the showers was also really good. Large amount of space in the room, very unusual for Japan.
