As everything in Japan, it was all perfectly organized and the staff was super kind. We had a great experience there, the place is wonderful, the quietness and the unexpected foot bath (onsen) was amazing. Food was also great, everything well explained and with all the support needed.

Our stay at Hotel Fuki no Mori was the highlight of our trip to Japan. Everything about the hotel was perfect - Onsen, dinners, breakfast, grounds, and the facilities. We spent three nights there and we did not want to leave!

This was a really special place to have had the chance to stay in. Beautiful old building with so many original features and character (paper sliding walls, futons, tatami mats). It was a total contrast to modern identikit hotels and a great opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese wooden home whilst on the Nakasendo trail. Our pre-ordered dinner (chicken hot pot) was amazing and the simple breakfast was ready to help ourselves to in the little kitchen. Wish we could have stayed longer. The manager was so welcoming.

They style and quality of the accommodation, plus the location in Nagiso, giving easy access to the shops, restaurants and train station. Also very much liked the audio system, tv projector and access to Netflix and Amazon. Some very nice touches.

If you’re considering this place, just book it. You will have an amazing time. The beauty of the house and the surrounding area truly deserve time to slow down during your Nakasendo trip. This stay was one of the absolute highlights of our visit to Japan. Communication with Tommy was fast and easy even before we arrived. He was patient with us despite our delayed replies due to a busy schedule, and everything was perfectly prepared when we got there. Upon arrival, Tommy welcomed us with a local snack and a cup of tea. As we sat in a beautiful room overlooking bamboo trees, he shared the history of the house and its renovation. His English is excellent, and he answered all our questions warmly and thoroughly. He is genuinely friendly and made us feel at home. He then showed us around the house, pointing out interesting features and making sure we were comfortable. He also provided great restaurant recommendations. The house itself is stunning. We spent over an hour taking photos and videos, admiring the craftsmanship and attention to detail. The beds were enormous; my fiancé and I ended up sharing one because it was so spacious and comfortable. The bathtub was huge, and with gentle music playing in the background, it felt like our own private spa. The modern kitchen and beautiful ceramics had us wondering where they were sourced because they were that aesthetic. The view from the living room was so peaceful it made you want to simply sit down and soak it in. Everything felt luxurious, and we truly wished we had stayed longer. Tommy even booked a table for us at Pierrot, which was a wonderful experience as well. Tsumago is very close, so we were able to enjoy the town with only a handful of tourists, since most were just passing through. The locals were incredibly friendly, and the overall experience is something we will cherish forever. This place is an exceptional value for memories you will keep forever!

Nagiso is a small village , and a convenient stop when walking from Magome and Tsumago when hiking the nakasendo. ( accommodation in those two villages is very difficult to obtain). Excellent cafe across from the station but there was only one restaurant open on the night we were there , mid week.

Nagiso itself is an unremarkable city, but the surrounding area, the so called 'Japanese Alps' is fantastic. One can visit Tsumago, a preserved ancient Japanese style village, where one can even book a ryokan with kaiseki (excellent Japanese style) dinner, for an overnight stay. The famous 'Nakasendo trail', a 10 km walk in gorgeous countryside, from Magome to Tsumago is a major attraction of the region. Magome can be reached by public bus from Nagiso or Tsumago.

Visited three areas this time: Narai-juku/ Tsumago-juku/ Magome-juku: all are very nicely reserved areas and the hotel is located close except for Narai-juku (70km away). Had a 100% Soba twice at lunch nearby : both are very good. Dropped in several Michi-no-Eki and bought local foods and items at half of them.
