I had so many expectations and Ekoin delivered everything. The temple itself is gorgeous, it is over 1.000 years, but so well kept, just impecable tatamis, garden, paintings, artwork. Also, it is so close to Okunoin cementery...i loved this part of town, so calm, feels like another time. The shared restrooms were a concern before getting there, but they ended up being one of the best of our entire trip - the bath is at the onsen, but is was ok for a day. Also, they provide a guide book to temple etiquette/schedules -just READ IT, do not go to morning service wearing yukata and do not arrive late. The monks are kind enough to let it go, but it is very disrespectful. The food is great, even though we are not vegetarians, we loved shojing ryori! And our favourite part was the morning service and the goma/fire ritual, do not miss it.

Incredible dinner and breakfast. The temple is beautiful, the room is comfortable, and the bath is very relaxing. The monks go out of their way to make you feel welcome and provide you with an opportunity to take part and be able to see their faith.

The entire stay and experience was amazing. The staff were very professional and attentive, again this is not suppose to be a typical hotel or Ryokan but honestly their sympathy puts many other such places to shame. The offuru bath was really warm and relaxing. The garden was pretty and the morning ceremony was an unforgettable cultural experience.

It was warm and comfortable - the owner made it even more welcoming with a comprehensive introduction to the town and sound advice. It’s just a 2 min walk to the cemetery, the bus stop that brings you to the cable car station, and entry to a hiking path.

The breakfast was amazing, we stayed for 3 nights and every morning it was something different, nutritious and delicious! Staying with Paulo was amazing, she really goes above and beyond to make sure you feel welcome and have everything you need. The space itself is traditional Japanese and was beautiful to relax in, highly recommend! Koyasan is a very special place, if I was to ever return I would stay again at koyasan space as it fitted the vibe of the whole village.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed. The kindness and quiet beauty and the FOOD were heavenly. A friend suggested we go and stay a night in a temple for the full experience, (although a day trip is fine,) and we are so glad that we did. The Buddhist Okunoin cemetery is the largest in Japan and is lit by lanterns at night for a beautiful otherworldly (but actually this world! ;) unforgettable evening walk. Beautiful temples and sacred sites to visit, and many shops and little cafes to enjoy. We stayed in the Sanboin temple and were so delighted by our experience.

Don't miss touring the cemetery.

Don't miss touring the cemetery. It is amazing with so many different types of monuments and statuary. We toured it without a guide during the day light hours and feel that we really didn't miss anything by not seeing it by moonlight. The town has an ancient feel to it and is worth spending at least one night. I just wish that there were more choices for hotels as the only choices seem to be a Guest House and a multitude of Monasteries.

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

Loved how spacious the room was, there was even a couch and small TV. Tommy was great at explaining what was open and closed in the area. Very clean and modern, always looked forward to going back to the guesthouse after a day of exploring. Great shower and bidet. Would recommend to anyone staying at Koyasan as an alternative to temple lodging. It's a convenient location for walking to all the sights in Koyasan and for taking the bus.

This was an authentic Temple stay just as promised. Beautiful quiet spot in Koyasan. Everything was as described. Perfectly presented meals were served in private dining areas for each party staying - around 12 people in total. Food was delicious. Morning ceremony was included and we were encouraged to partake (don't go down in your Yukata though!) Peaceful and contemplative. Would like to have had more time in Koyasan, one night

The place was amazing. Very beautiful, with a zen garden outside. Very obliging people at the reception and everything as described. The hole of Koyasan was a unique and unforgettable experience which was enhanced by our stay. Extra special like to the showers which were traditional ryokan style. What my body needed after so many days of exploring cities in Japan!!!
