The hotel is absolutely amazing, love the rooms, the furniture, the lightning, everything! The staff is very friendly and helpful, you get everything you need there, they even have free face masks. In the rooms you have bathtub with water from the hot springs. It's insane! Would definitely go there again, no hesitation.

Had the most incredible stay at Hakone Honbako. I have been to Hakone several times and this is the only hotel I have found very quiet and relaxing, and this resort exceeded my expectation especially in terms of food. The food was impeccable. They are explain Edo culture on the dishes, also provide explanations in Japanese and English. In the restaurant, everyone gathers around the counter and there is a unique sense of togetherness. There was a new discovery: experiencing Edo culture, which even the Japanese do not know. One night is not enough, I will want to stay at this hotel for two or more nights to enjoy a good book and a meal. Hope to be back again one day!

This place was superb! I went at the end of my Japan trip and Hakone and this hotel were the perfect respite from the busy travelling. The room was comfortable, clean, authentic, and had an amazing view of the forest. The staff are incredibly kind and helpful, and continuously went the extra mile with so many things including local recommendations and dinners. It really added to my time there and made it even more special. The onsen is superb overlooking the forest.

If you don't have a car, travel around the Hakone area will be by train and local bus. Try and get hold of a bus route map when you arrive as it can make it a lot easier to plan your connections.

Hakone is a lovely relaxing spot to stay after the bustle of Japanese Cities. We chose to stay here for a few days at the end of our trip, which was perfect. Definitely try one of the local Onsens - even if you feel a little uncomfortable about it - this was possibly the best part of our trip. The Hakone round trip is also great.

I didn't get further than Gora.

I didn't get further than Gora. I found it to be overcrowded and was glad to leave. I intended to spend some time in nature, but there are too many traffic jams and people. I was there on a Monday so I can't imagine what it would be like on the weekend. There are probably areas that are quieter, there was hard wind so the cable car didn't go and that led to more people driving up in cars and buses. I didn't have the Hakone Free Pass so I could just get on any bus and I was glad for that because there were a lot of people at bus stops who couldn't get into a bus because of their Free Pass.

A quiet town but buzzling with Tradition and History.

A quiet town but buzzling with Tradition and History. The food is amazing and the Onsen's are good. Biggest Challenge here is the transport. I recommend renting a car here especially if you want to go to neighbouring areas like Shizuoka, Fujikawaguchiko and Kamakura so see Mt. Fuji.

Loved the Open Air Museum -- great sculpture garden. And it has a foot bath, because why not? Nearby we stopped at the Gyoza Center, which was delicious. We did the Ropeway, and were delighted by the whole active volcano thing. There's a foot bath there, too. My feet have never been so pampered. With more time, I would have taken a ferry on the lake, and/or trained around to the other parts of Hakone, which is actually more spread out than I fully appreciated. I know people do Hakone as a day trip from Tokyo, but I think it was quite fun to stay and experience the full effect of hot springs culture.

The cable car ride up and over the volcanic fumaroles

The cable car ride up and over the volcanic fumaroles then down to Lake Ashi, and a boat trip across the lake. The parks, gardens and the cedar lined old Tokkaido Edo period road A reconstructed gatehouse and one of the old 17th century "Stations" on the Tokkaido. Fantastic views of Fuji san. One of the highlights of my trip

Literally everything. First of all the hospitality of the staff: we had trouble reaching the hotel because there were no buses or taxes available after 4.30 pm in motohakone due to overtourism. The staff sent us a shuttle for free! Because of this, we were late for dinner; still, they allowed us to eat: they were super understanding. Both dinner and breakfast were traditional japanese cuisine: tasty and varied. The room and the yukatas were beautiful and clean. We tried the open public onsen, which was absolutely cosy as well as scenic.

Hakone and Kinokuniya Ryokan was an absolute highlight of my trip to Japan. The hotel is beautiful and the staff were so lovely and helpful in every possible way. The private onsen was incredible and such a lovely way to end the days and so easy to schedule in! We also included the dinner service (kaiseki) and the food was different each night and tasted incredible. If I’m ever back in Japan I’ll be back here :)

The private onsen is wonderful. We loved it! The staff at the hotel are absolutely delightful and really make staying with them an exceptional experience. The food is traditional Japanese style and is delicious. The location is 5 minutes walk from Hakone ropeway and cable car. Very convenient

Great place to stay ! You need the car to get there, but it is a lovely place. The room was big, confortfull, very clean with tatami big corner. the hot spring (Onsen) is amazing. Silence everywhere. Machines for food, drinks and ice cream. Very good place to visit Hakone and Lake Ashi.
