we loved this boutique hotel so so so much. Although it is a little bit far from most things, the facilities and food and the hospitality from the owners have far exceeded our expectations and made up for everything! It is a 20+ year old building that the owners bought and renovated. Rooms are so clean and well kept, mattresses and pillows were comfortable. Although there were shared toilets (and this can be slightly troublesome), the toilets are fully automated and very clean. We had full board (breakfast and dinner) and we were here in summer. Food provided was excellent and cooked so well. The produce used were all from within the farm!!! (how much fresher can food be??) It was like 'farm to table' experience. Rice was from the vicinity too. Meats used were from Hokkaido. They even had a variety of natural wines (mostly imported) and a good variety of sake. We had very tasty sake. The owners also took a lot of effort in building a traditional (? Swedish) sauna and japanese bath. The water used was boiled using firewood in a traditional firewood stove?!! We both enjoyed these facilities very very much. We're sure this is even better during the peak of winter after skiing for a whole day. The owners (sorry I didnt get your names) were also such pleasant people and were very hospitable - this made the entire experience soo perfect. (tip: They are snowboarding coaches! they teach during winter season :) ) Thank you!! We will be back :) I will highly recommend this place to friends!

Pension Ken & Mary's hosts are absolutely wonderful people, kind, welcoming and extremely helpful in every possible way. We stayed for 4 nights to go skitouring in the area since it's perfectly located in between Asahidake, Furano and Horokanai. The house is just beautiful inside. So comfortable and with many amenities provided. I'm not sure but I believe we were the first guests at this listing. It feels like a family home that has been renovated to convert it for guests. Coffee, bottled water, some games were provided, toiletries, detergent, fever patches for a child, and many other little things. Very good security on the house, whether or not it's actually needed. The kitchen is small but full, and I really mean full, all manner of kitchen utilities provided if you want to do cooking. The washer/dryer actually does dry your clothes too, unlike many of these combo models. And the whole place is so spacious. We were two adults and a seven year old. There's a living room, a Japanese style room with tatami and very tasteful decorations, the kitchen, a foyer, the toilet room, the bathroom sink and laundry room, and the bath/shower room. Upstairs there were two bedrooms we used and I think the host can open up another bedroom if the party booking the place is larger. I could go on about all the great little things about this house. Just book it and you'll see for yourself. I only hope I can still afford it next time, as it was such a good deal this time. From the outside the house is nondescript, on the corner across from the Kumon, with one parking space. The host speaks reasonable English which is very helpful and we appreciated that. The location is fine. It's in the middle of Biei. There's a big grocery store nearby and the train station isn't far. If you drive there's a parking spot, and you can easily access everything in the area. It's more convenient than staying in Asahikawa. Please do respect the host and the house. Keep it beautiful.

The host was so lovely and kind! Breakfast every morning was an absolute treat. The place was so cosy and quite. We took trips to fukiage onsen every other day which was magical. Although we drove, there is a train station right by the house which could allow for easy public transport. Overall this was by far the best airbnb I've ever stayed in. Thank you!

Biei was central for where we wanted to go - cycling to see...

Biei was central for where we wanted to go - cycling to see autumn leaves, Mt Asahidake Ropeway and Shirogane Blue Pond. One, there are a few bicycle rental shops in close proximity (all are similarly priced). Unless you are young and fit and ambitious, you will NOT be able to pedal the power-assisted bicycle to ALL the recommended places. We set aside 4 hours to comfortably visit 4 places. (Please set to the lowest assist mode if you want the battery to last for 4 hours). Two, the drive up to Mt Asahidake was magical as it started to snow. We were hoping it will not snow too heavily for the drive down. The snow was too blinding for even a short hike. (The forecast was accurate). Three, if one has the time, one should visit Shirogane Blue Pond in the daytime and night time. We arrived (5 pm) just as the last tourist bus was leaving. Twenty minutes are ample for a few rounds of the night lighting.

Travel books and blogs talk of Biei's famous Blue Pond, Shiragano Waterfalls, Takushinkan, various famous trees and observatories. But Biei is much more than that. It is a perfect scenic, serene getaway from busy city life. You don't actually need to plan and follow your itinerary to the point. Just roam around, whether on bicycles or in a rented car. Soak in the brisk air. Fumble into random cafes and restaurants. Biei is just so humble and modest, and yet very satisfying.

The vast farmland is charming, typical of the northern land, and for someone living in the city, the natural beauty was soothing and I feel like I want to go back again. I traveled from Asahikawa Airport by rental car, and the roads were smooth and comfortable. I even ventured to Furano and had a roast beef bowl at Kumagera. I also enjoyed Farm Tomita even though it wasn't lavender season. On the other hand, I was glad it wasn't crowded. I ended up going to the Blue Pond towards the evening, so I think the blue might have been different if I had gone a little earlier.

I think the number of tourists was at its peak.

I think the number of tourists was at its peak. There were few places to eat, and everywhere we went there were lines, so we couldn't eat on time. It was disappointing that there wasn't much air conditioning in the summer. Hokkaido is now as hot as a city, so I think roadside stations should learn more from other prefectures. Everything was disappointing. The food was also disappointing, and I wondered if the tourists who came to see Furano's grandeur and scenery were satisfied when they left.

For dessert, I was impressed by the handmade chiffon cake and delicious coffee. Thanks to you, I was able to finish the Biei Marathon safely. The farmland was tidy, and the lavender and potato flowers were beautiful, making for a truly beautiful landscape. There was almost no trash on the ground, which was a testament to the efforts of the townspeople and local government officials. However, when we tried to drive to see the "Parent and Child Trees," we were told that tourist vehicles were not permitted on the road in front of the tree, and there were no signs for nearby parking lots. We had no choice but to park where the road was wide and walk. Many cars were stopping and backing up in front of the sign, which was confusing. It would have been nice if there had been advance information about this in tourist pamphlets or similar.

We used this hotel as a base for our hikes into the mountains in summer. It is perfectly located for this. The owners are very helpful and knowledgeable and were able to advise us for the best walks we had in all of Japan. Apart from that, we had the best food of our whole stay in Japan here in this hotel!
