FAQs about hotels in Bologna

A Gourmet Delight

World-class cuisine is what Bologna does best. Nowhere in Italy, a country with considerable culinary heritage, is the food considered better than in this medieval gem.

Bolognese sauce of course originated here, but to try the real thing look out for ragú on the menu. Cold meats and cheeses are also exquisite. Make sure you save plenty of time for eating – the Bolognese like to savour their food, so a meal can last for hours.

Many of the best eateries and homemade ice cream shops can be found behind the mile upon mile of porticoed streets, now UNESCO World Heritage listed. The complex of medieval churches and buildings in cobbled Piazza Santo Stefano is a tranquil spot to explore. Climb one of the Two Towers nearby (not the one leaning at a startling angle) for spectacular views over this red-roofed city.

The focal point of Bologna is huge Piazza Maggiore, whose Santo Petronio church has an unimpressive, half-finished façade that doesn’t prepare you for its sheer scale inside. Fanning out from this square are the buildings of Europe’s oldest university, founded in 1088 and home to the city’s best museums.

Bologna accommodation on Booking.com ranges from small B&Bs to luxury hotels, all easily accessible from Bologna Airport just outside the city.

Bologna is a large and lively city with plenty to see and do. There’s no shortage of great food options for gastronomy lovers, interesting sights, and excellent shopping. The city feels reasonably clean and well-kept, and while the architecture is nice, it doesn’t stand out compared to other Italian destinations. The biggest downsides are the traffic and public transport. Traffic jams are frequent and can be frustrating, and the bus system is unreliable, with routes that run late or seem to follow no clear schedule. Overall, Bologna offers a solid experience with good food and lots of activity, but some practical aspects can make getting around a challenge.

Why Bologna?

Why Bologna? A beautiful and lively city, full of history, great food, and welcoming people. The streets make it perfect for walking, and the atmosphere is warm and authentic. A wonderful place to visit! It was a pleasure for me!

Bologna is a gem, and very different from Florence, Rome or Milan. There are wonderful covered arcades on the commercial streets which make walking a pleasure in all weather. Bologna is also a foodie city, don't miss the night market, the Sunday flea market, and the Santo Stephano church complex. I love the red brick and ochre buildings. It's easy to imagine it as a medieval city as so many buildings from the 12-13th century as still standing and in use and the old walls and gates still define the streets and layout of the city.

Bologna, like so many tourist destinations, rests on its laurels, knowing people will come any way so what's the point in making too much effort... Until people stop coming. Transport outside the city is a nightmare, particularly for the Unipol Arena, should you be attending an event there.

Bologna is a beautiful city with wonderful architecture, churches history and museums. Though there are tourists, it is comfortable and has none of the overcrowded scenes of the major cities. The food, the food. Bologna has some of the best. Their Ragu sauce, tortellini soup, and the lasagna are well worth the trip. The basilica, San Petronio, is filled with history, beauty and controversy. Santo Stefano Church a is a wonderful contrast in simplicity and worship. A trip up to the Sanctuary of Madonna di San Luca either by tour trin or by foot (LONG uphill climb) is a must. the views of the surrounding country side along with the spectacular art and grandeur of the church were a highlight.

Apart from the towers (which you can only look at) and the main square (with the wonderful fountain), it's not packed with sites unless you love art museums. I was disgusted by the graffiti, which was everywhere across the city, with plenty of homeless-looking people smoking weed (in front of the cathedral). I have been all over Italy and really wouldn't come back here ever again and I never thought I'd say that about an Italian city but it is just horrible..

I book the Almarossa whenever there is availability when I go to Bologna. I like the apartments, I like the location, I like the staff at reception. There is a handy laundry room, public transportation, supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and shops nearby. All places of touristic interest are within walking distance, and the university quarters are nearby. Central station is also reachable on foot. I will continue booking this hotel when available on my futures trips to Bologna, because I feel at home and comfortable here.

I'd recommend the hotel for anyone staying in Bologna. The staff were friendly and accommodating, especially when the key to my hotel room broke. The breakfast was basic, but it matches your needs as a traveller. The location is also central. It's on the edge of the centre, but still in the centre nevertheless. I didn't like the walk in shower in the room though. It had no shower head, which I do prefer to have. Otherwise, I enjoyed my experience here.

In a quiet side street but just two minutes' walk from Bologna Central railway station, so very convenient indeed. Spacious and clean. Met by a helpful and courteous host. The apartment is part of the Wonderful Italy network, and the company was helpful in giving us directions to the apartment and in offering suggestions for excursions. They are able to arrange these if desired.

Literally across the road from the central train station, so really handy for connecting to the airport / the rest of Italy. Short walk or very cheap taxi into town from there. Reception staff are super friendly and helpful and have great English. Rooms are very well sound-insulated and quiet.
