The quiet and cosy cabin, sitting in the warm cabin in the serene forests was just magical. As it was snowing heavily at Akureyri in the middle of March, we decided to spend most of our day here. Enjoyed the hot tub in the forest.

This cabin was pure magic. Tucked away in peaceful nature, it felt like stepping into a cozy Icelandic dream. Every detail — from the lighting to the decor to the thoughtful little touches — was clearly arranged with care. The space was spotless, warm, and welcoming, and we instantly felt at home. We only wish we had booked more nights — it was the perfect place to unwind after long days on the road. The views, the atmosphere, the comfort… everything exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, beautiful stay that still feels close to adventure.

A lovely location outside Akureyri (12 minutes or so) set on the side of the fjord with great views of the surrounding mountains and good for northern lights if they are kind enough to show. Our bedrooms were in a separate building to the main building, were clean and comfortable with comfy beds and good showers. Breakfast was plentiful and with a good variety of things to choose from. There is a nice lounge area and a great walk down to the water’s edge. The staff couldn’t have been kinder, helping us out when one of our group was not well.

The name Viking Country Club is misleading.

The name Viking Country Club is misleading. It is a house with 12rooms, some very small. Not a quaint inn nor hotel nor charming. It was a full house and there was only 2 bathrooms, one on each floor. I question if that even meets a health code. Our friends room was so small that they couldn’t open their 2suitcases and they had a lot of flies in their room. The husband eventually slept in the car. We were asked to remove our shoes and place them by the door and then some of us had trouble obtaining the right shoes. One woman could not find hers. We were to stay 2 nights but left the following morning, writing the host a note since he was not there. It advertised continental breakfast but they provided milk and coffee if you wanted to make your own. Some people wrote good reviews but this was the worst place any of us (4 people) stayed in.

A small old fishing village that used to thrive on herring.

A small old fishing village that used to thrive on herring. These days, there are no herring in the bay anymore, but there are whales. With a bit of luck, you can hear and see them in the evening. There's a small restaurant. You can also go diving and rock climbing. The old factory has been converted into an art gallery and is definitely worth a visit!

It's a bit difficult to rate Hjalteyri, as tourism was restricted due to COVID-19. However, the town had charm, and the surrounding area has a lot to offer: pretty little fishing villages, an exciting mountain pass road through the impressive landscape – definitely stay at the Apt. Hotel Hjalteyri.
