The Lily of the Lake

Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lough Leane, colourful Killarney is a top Irish tourist destination. The UNESCO-listed Killarney National Park surrounds Muckross House, a stately home sitting in large grounds with a traditional farm.

A tree-lined lane leads to Muckross Abbey, a former Franciscan monastery whose cloisters enclose a tall yew tree. Celtic crosses line the cemetery and beyond is the lake, at the centre of which is a tree-lined outcrop, home of the historic Ross Castle. This 15th-century stone fortress once housed the O’Donoghue clan, one of whom reportedly lives at the bottom of the lough.

More legends envelop the Ring of Kerry – a scenic drive starting from Killarney and supposedly the last place to spot a leprechaun. Gushing Torc waterfall is just one of its fantastic sights.

In Killarney itself, horse-drawn carts roam narrow streets whose Irish pubs offer great nightlife. Impressive St Mary’s Cathedral has a towering spire and somewhat dark interior. The local gaelic football team play at Fitzgerald Stadium, and more sports can be enjoyed at Killarney riding stables and the nearby golf and fishing club. There is also a popular racecourse.

Accommodation in Killarney on Booking.com includes 5-star lakeside hotels, B&Bs near the train station and town centre guest houses. All with that trademark Irish hospitality.

Killarney is a beautiful place , surrounded by water and forests. Lots of history to explore. The Tourist information office is full of ideas and leaflets as to what to do and see. Both the bus station and the train station are nearby , allowing you to see further afield if wanted. There are lots of places to eat and the quality of food is excellent. The Hop on Hop of bus takes you to many of the sights but there is a far amount of walking to do! Taxi s are easily found and the prices are very reasonable. Don't forget to check out the Killarney Duck shop- an experience all on its own!

We don't live too far away from Killarney so we have stayed here many times over the last 30 years and every time I have enjoyed it. It's a lively town with music, restaurants, pubs, nature and everything else you can think of. The accommodation has always been top class. Tourists are very welcome and it's lovely to see visitors being taken care of. The people are so friendly and helpful and you can see how proud they are of their town. I know I will be back again soon until next time. Go raibh maith agat.

Our Killarney stop was wonderful, and we could have easily stayed another full day. DO NOT miss the Gap of Dunloe. That was our biggest regret that we did not know how breathtaking this area was and we left it before we really got a chance to fully explore to see some of the other sites that were worthy, but nothing compared to the Gap...God's country.

Stayed here only two nights with a day spent on the Dingle Peninsula. Only had time to visit Muckross House, Muckross Abbey (both good), St, Mary's Cathedral, Torc Waterfall (not worth the stop if you live near mountain areas) and a photo stop at Ross Castle. Killarney is easy town to drive in, but hard to find parking in the downtown area if trying to eat at a restaurant on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Beautiful Irish city, great views all around, lots to do and plenty of options for dining shopping and just relaxing. My only complaint was the weather... but like our day trip tour guide said, "If you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes and it'll change!" Too true 👍

The experience in Killarney was the best of our trip.

The experience in Killarney was the best of our trip. Despite having little time, we were able to go shopping, enjoy an excellent dinner, and watch a great live concert in one of the local pubs. Truly wonderful!
