Lovely town, with fantastic pubs and great buzz, and lots of friendly locals. Enjoyed Lough Ree up the road for a cold but invigorating swim, and soaking up the considerable local history and culture.

Athlone, for its size has some amazing restaurants and plenty of very good pubs. Good shopping options also. Centre is quite small so very walkable. Plus it’s right on the Shannon. Plenty to see and do. Well worth a visit.

the west bank was really nice to stroll around, nice coffee shops and a lot of nice places to see in that small area , st peter and pauls church, the castle , the luan gallery, seans pub and the bastion gallery and of course the majestic shannon river

Small town with awesome history, from Sean's pub to Maisies (live music) to the Viking riverboat (we had some "real" Vikings come on board which took the whole ride to a new level! The food in town was awesome, especially the place along the river, eating a great pizza with a beer (or two) while watching the boats slide by was wonderful.

I loved the friendly people. Lovely shops I didn't have time to explore the area. I loved the marina boats etc. The boats going up and down the river. Pubs were lovely met the vikings in Sean óga Very entertaining got photos.

This is my third trip to Athlone, the reason being to visit a friend from my U.S. days, who was staying with family. There is much to appreciate about Athlone, it has a lot of character. There are plenty of shops and two shopping malls. There is a good train service to/from Dublin and onto Galway, stopping in between. There is a bus station adjacent to the train station. You could travel on public transport thus avoiding hire car and driving. The river Shannon flows through the centre of Athlone, it is popular for fishing and sailing and walking. There is a tourist centre, and it is a lively place to stay. There are some good quality hotels. There seems to be plenty going on in the surrounding areas visiting ancient sites etc
