The property we stayed is done in traditional style with love and attention to detail. There is ample parking space, each house comes fully equipped, and a second-floor balcony provides an excellent space for reading, relaxing, or just star gazing. Very friendly, generous and attentive hostess, offering a welcome of raki and plenty of advice about the area. The place itself has some of the best beaches in the island, excellent sea front restaurants, and offers a glimpse into a still unspoiled , slow paced Crete far from the ravages of mass tourism. At the same time, places of archeological interest (e.g. Zakros), prime surfing spots and the exotic palm beaches of Vai and Itanos are all within reasonable reach.

The location is excellent. Kato Zakros is the perfect place to relax. Even in the middle of the summer, it is not crowded. It has some small, but delicious and relatively cheap restaurants next to the beach. The Zakros Minoan palace is a 5-minute walk from the property. The exit of the Gorge of the Dead is two minutes away. Xerokampos, which is famous for its sandy beaches, is a 20-minute drive. The property itself is excellent for a family; it is clean, it has all the facilities you may need, and has a perfect view to the sea.

Most travelers will arrive in Crete through Chania or Heraklion, then either drive or get a bus eastward. They might do as I did and hop to Agios Nikolaos, then to Sitia, and finally will travel further east to the small town of Zakros. At that point there are two ways to the village of Kato Zakros; either a short drive or a hike through the Gorge of the Dead. The Gorge is not particularly long but the ground is covered in loose rocks, which means every step must be carefully taken and you must be physically apt with good mobility. For the love of God, make sure you and your friends wear good boots with ankle support. I took the hike on a nice breezy day. The Gorge of the Dead is where the ancient Minoans of the region laid their dead to rest — and if you go there on a quiet day you'll understand why. It is a place of introspective peace and quiet. I arrived at Kato Zakros around noon, finding a very quiet and peaceful village in the process of preparing itself for the approaching tourist season. The studio was atop a hill, with an absolutely stunning view of the village, the Minoan ruins of Kato Zakros, the olive groves and the sea. Georgia welcomed me with food and drink, and her hospitality was so great that during my stay I even had lunch with her and her family. The studio is a cozy, compact home with a small kitchen and spacious bathroom, and a bed with some kind of magical capacity to induce incredible sleep. The whole place gives off a sense of peace and quiet that cannot be conveyed with words. After crossing the Gorge of the Dead all the problems and stresses of life back home are so far away. The insanely wealthy burn small fortunes building excessive homes that cannot give the sense of peace that Georgia's studio gives. Plus the combo of Gorge of the Dead + Georgia's Studio + Minoan Palace + Beach is the kind of thing psychologists should seriously consider a high tech therapy method.

The house is big and has a fantastic view, since it's in the high part of Zakros village (village shops are only 5 minutes away on foot). The owner made it easy for us to park in the surroundings. Very clean and it had all what we needed. The position is strategic to reach both Kato Zakros and Xerocampos in a 15 minutes ride. I will return next time I go to Crete.

I booked last minute as I was on the road & decided to stop. It's a nice apartment, large with everything you need. It's up on the old road to Zakros so great views. Nikos, Manoli & Giorgos from the Taverna at kato Zakros are helpful & super friendly, you collect the key from there.. Zakros minoan palace ruin is just down the road & walking to the gorge is easy. Great food there right on the beach, peaceful, traditional & good for the soul. I will return 😀..efharisto
