FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Been to York lots of times, The Churchill Hotel was a real let down. This was part of our Christmas break, we purposely spent time out of the hotel as the room was so badly equipped. Room 135 is a single room with a double bed. Go to premier inn for a better experience at a fraction of the price.

York was super bust couldn't see the market stalls at all and streets was crammed, I would visit again maybe a Tuesday mid month as the last weekend in November was way to busy it was unenjoyable but it shouldn't be a reflection on going again but knowing how busy it gets id travel one day then head to yhe market the next morning with the sober crowds.

York is an amazing city with loads of history, the pubs are really nice and it also has good shops, its disappointing that the car parks are nearly double for non residents, do you want tourists to visit and bring income to your city or not?

Visitng York during Christmas time is a joy.

Visitng York during Christmas time is a joy. Shambles street takes you into a different time period with shops still maintaining the original outlook. Lot of different experiences in every shop. York Chocolate Story tour was a good experience for the whole family. I have been to York Dungeon before and they have changed the setup, so it seems to be less horror. It is good for people who like to listen to horror stories.

York is a charming city with a surprising amount of things to do, my partner and I wanted to see York Minster, The Shambles and the city wall within a day and got way more than we bargained for. The city of York has such rich history and beautiful buildings you’ll find yourself getting lost for the pleasure of it and it’s a great city to walk in, from enchanted cobbled streets to picturesque parks nestled in the heart of the city everything feels within walking distance and York Minster provides a stunning backdrop and bell-toll that makes it hard to get lost no matter where you are, there’s tonnes of food options with plenty of delightful little pubs and lovely staff/locals who were more than happy to help and far more options for shopping than we anticipated. We will definitely be coming back here one day to checkout the Jorvik Viking Centre, Museums and to take in the awe inspiring view from the city walls again.

Stayed here for a few days and a really good find. The Hotel was comfortable and staff where great. The breakfast was excellent and filled us up for the day. The Hotel is situated perfectly for the city, and was a short 5 minute walk to outskirts of the city centre. Would recommend the hotel and would definitely rebook here if we are lucky enough to revisit York.

Lovely room in a national trust setting, good location, walk into York via canal or by bus from the road outside. Lovely swimming pool that I had to myself one morning! Hot tub and sauna great too. Gardens lovely to walk around and a terrace for drinks or cosy rooms inside. Staff the most attentive I’ve experienced in a while in a 4/5 star hotel.
