FAQs about hotels in York

England Through The Ages

Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once allowed access to the city.

Walk the walls for wonderful views towards the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.

A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even have a go at archaeology yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.

Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around 30 minutes’ drive away is Castle Howard, a stately home with over 1000 acres of grounds.

Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there is a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guest houses in York and the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Personally my Honeymoon was in York nearly 45 years ago.. I have always loved York for all the characteristics one sees and experiences. So much to offer for all ages.. Covering museums, Shambles, Railway Museum variety of shops, walking round the walls. Cathedral.York Chocolate experience, also not forgetting the Christmas market . (Now my son lives here...a great reason to return too)

Beautiful City, very clean with amazing Shops. However if it is history and culture you are looking for then York is perfect. The buildings are so beautiful and lots of little cobbled streets. Make sure to walk down all the little alleyways as there is always something to see

Surpassed expectations-didn’t venture outside the city walls...

Surpassed expectations-didn’t venture outside the city walls! Experienced the amazing mayhem of a Saturday night in and around the Shambles - great pubs with fabulous atmosphere, food and music. Can be pricey for drinks in some places though. And so many restaurants! Beautiful buildings / architecture everywhere - a feast for the eyes. Just wish I could have seen it 100 years ago before the ‘chain’ restaurants and shops got hold of them but they are still beautiful. We stayed in the shadow of the incredible York Minster which was a slightly quieter area. An abundance of tourist attractions are available to suit all tastes. We went in November just when the Xmas decorations were up everywhere which added to the atmosphere - would love to visit again in the spring to take advantage of lighter evenings.

York is a nice city to visit. Attractive period shops.

York is a nice city to visit. Attractive period shops. Good mix of chains and independent. Some high end retailers have stores here. Vast choice of cafes, pubs and restaurants Steets are very busy on the weekends. The cathedral is the main attraction and is worth a visit but be prepared to pay for entry. I have visited the city twice and both times it was flooded because of torrential rain but that’s just bad luck

York is an amazing city with something for everyone.

York is an amazing city with something for everyone. An incredible history teamed with great modern facilities makes it the perfect place for a city break. Small enough to walk around but big enough to hold anyone's interest. Would recommend Lendals Cellars for good food at a reasonable price and great ambience. A good range of accommodation to suit any budget too.

The city is so interesting and full of history.

The city is so interesting and full of history. I love all the small alleys and the age of the property's that are all well maintained in their original form. A very clean city offering so much for everyone. The christmas market felt very nostalgic due to the city being so old. There are modern shops in old settings, and museums and places of interest. I felt very safe travelling alone here. Lots of places offering vegan options. Yorvil train ride amazing

Lovely room with an en suite bathroom. Comfortable rooms with everything you need for an overnight stay. Mark was extremely helpful and lovely throughout the whole duration of our stay. He helped us to park at the accommodation and allowed us early entry into our room, he offered advice on the local area and best things to go and see with lots of history too! The hotel was quiet with the other guests and was in the most perfect location for York City centre. Would highly recommend booking here for your stay in York. Thank you!

The location was brilliant, with a very short walk to the city centre. Hotel feels tucked away and quiet, even though its in the heart of everything. The Hotel is just a stunning little gem inside and out, with private parking on site. Rooms are beautifully decorated alongside the rest of the hotel. Food here is lovely and the breakfast is a must. If your visiting York then I highly recommend staying here as you will not be disappointed.
