I visit Windermere on a regular basis to dance the Argentine Tango at the Ladyholme Centre not far from the town itself. While there i have stayed in a variety of accommodation and have always had a good experience. The distance between Windermere and Bowness is only a walk of around 20 minutes. Buses are frequent within the area. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants in and around the town to choose from and it is a safe place for Solo travellers to explore.

Poor run down hotel .

Poor run down hotel . The bulk of the staff were foreign and deeply embarrassed at the state of the hotel. Cleanliness disgusting, food revolting, facilities closed . Restaurant had a mop bucket in the centre catching rainwater . The mattress in the Club room was without protection and heavily stained with body fluids . Dogs barking at night and sat in the bar and Restaurant area. The main entrance was blown open and leaves /debris blowing in due to the lock being removed leaving it wide open and vulnerable. Temporarily staff working there also owned a nearby Greek restaurant and constantly tried to divert customers there. Cleanliness throughout the hotel was poor . Breakfast simply inedible. This place needs a huge injection of capital to bring it up to date 9and a complete change of staff from the manager to the cleaner to make it a viable business.

Bowness on Windermere is much livelier and you can see the lake and go on lake ferries from there, whereas Windermere itself is much higher up and does not have direct lake access. A great place to eat and some wonderful cakes is Sweet dreams on Quarry Rigg.

The area was mostly fine.

The area was mostly fine. In some areas the town was looking tired. Absence of any visible street cleaning. We must have passed an area where someone had let their dog foul the pavement at least eight times as we walked up and down to our guest house and back down towards the lake I know it’s individual dog owners where the responsibility lies but even so it’s a big tourist area So one would expect a bit more pride in the area Unfortunately we won’t be rushing back to visit

Windermere is a vibrant town.

Windermere is a vibrant town. It has a great choice of restaurants, cafes and bars offering a great range of food genres. It has a lot of independent shops with wonderful window displays and friendly, helpful teams. It has a spectacular lake which is lovely to walk beside. It is also a gateway to other towns in the wider area of the Lake District.

Scenery was breathtaking.

Scenery was breathtaking. Fabulous restaurants, coffee shops and boutique shops. We had fantastic food at the Thai restaurant King of Siam. Had a trip around the lake and drove to Cockermouth, Keswick and Scafell Pike.
