The hotel is a great place to stay if only for its historical significance. The location is excellent: walking distance to the cathedral, museums, and excellent restaurants. The breakfast was an enjoyable start to the morning and the service welcoming.

Lovely annex at the end of the garden, very clean and spacious. Comfortable beds .the hosts are very welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to provide lightweight bedding as the temperature was in the 30's, set up the sofa bed for us and provided a fan. We had a small DIY breakfast provided, with achoice of toast, cereal or croissants, tea and coffee in the cupboards along with a selection of jams. What a great little venue.

Followed the Walking Trail which led us to The Cathedral and the park, which were lovely with good riverside walks. The Court Room museum was interesting - and the Wednesday market was good. Great Italian restaurant just opposite the hotel.

So much to see. Great eating places. Amazed at how tourist friendly. Ate at the French restaurant Roux on the Saturday night. Great 2 course set menus for £20.95. Place was heaving and great atmosphere. Bill's for Sunday brunch. Comfortable dining on sofas and good tasting food.

Overall I found St. Albans disappointing.

Overall I found St. Albans disappointing. Yes, the Cathederal is wonderful and the Roman remains worth a visit but the town itself was nowhere near as charming as I had anticipated. I was expecting an interesting mediaeval town of higgly piggly streets but these were very limited. Pubs were ordinary for the most part, the Mermaid was the hands down winner. Frankly a day and a night would have done me.

We loved the Roman remains and Museum and really enjoyed visiting the Cathedral, which was free and very welcoming. We spent a very interesting wet afternoon at the preserved Signal Box (my husband is a rail enthusiast!) and also at the De Haviland museum just the other side of the motorway. We found a couple of good old fashioned pubs where the food was good - The Bull and The Six Bells. We also enjoyed a meal at Little Marakesh.

If you like history, particularly the Tudor era, you will love this hotel. It has a lot of the original features, low ceilings, slightly wonky creaky floors and original beams. There is a small restaurant which delivered a most delicious Sunday lunch; well recommended and pretty reasonable in price. The location is ideal for visiting the city cathedral and the town centre. A must for anyone visiting Saint Albans. The staff were very friendly and professional too.

We had a spacious, comfortable bedroom on the first floor and enjoyed our breakfast which offered lots of choice. The setting is impressive and just a short walk to the City centre and the Cathedral along a very characterful and historic street. The staff were very friendly and helpful and because we were attending a function there on the day of our departure they were very accommodating regarding a delayed checkout time.

Location, very handy for the city centre. Privacy, having the run of the place with the bonus of a small garden that wasn't overlooked in any direction. Perfect for my needs.
