From our arrival to departure we were totally spoilt by the staff. A very warm welcome was waiting for us by Molly who showed us to our room and invited us to have dinner there. This was our third visit to Balcary. Our welcoming room had a sea view which looked directly out the island. To see a black sky with amazing stars ✨ was worth spending time in awe, with street lamps these days a total rarety. We love Diana's ethos of organic healthy fresh food cooked from the menu and we chose fresh fish with organic vegetables. Our room was super warm with organic milk in the fridge perfect for the tea and coffee supplied. All bath and shower gels were in the well equipped ensuite. The king-size bed had a wonderful mattress and we both had a very comfortable night's sleep. The cooked breakfast in the morning was lovely to our specific needs seeved at the window table overlooking the island was very relaxing. This was the first hotel for a long time still allowing check out at 11am as it used to be. Whereas most hotels now want late check in and you out by 9.30am or 10am offering less serivice making a short stay very rushed and in the darker winter days for me to allow for a run and a relaxing breakfast and was a lovely surprise adding to our relaxation we appreciated. Our stay was above and beyond and will definitely stay again as very welcome escape. There are several walking routes with map available and running 🏃 for me.

From the moment we arrived the young lady at reception treated us like family. The heating wasn’t on in the room so she organised a space heater. My daughter and I were visiting my mum. The property was so homely and beautifully decorated and styled.

Great location and parking. The staff were outstanding. Martin and Margaret were great at breakfast, as were the lady who owns the hotel and the lady who checked me in. Breakfast- wow! Absolutely gorgeous. My room was very clean and comfortable. It was at the back of the hotel and was quiet. I was made to feel really welcome.

More like staying at a friends' place than a B&B. Lots of nice touches, tissues, body lotion etc. etc. Kate is an excellent host and I felt very welcome. There is an excellent Scottish inspired breakfast menu, I finally opted for smoked haddock and haggis, both delicious. Bart, the playful young cat, was entertaining and made the place seem even more homely! Would definitely stay again if in Castle Douglas!

Great lodge spotlessly clean with everything you'll need for a perfect stay. Good quality furniture and beds. Wonderful to watch the wildlife. So peaceful but within easy distance to the town. The owners were so helpful with a small issue we had and was resolved quickly.

Palnackie is a peaceful village with a small harbour set on...

Palnackie is a peaceful village with a small harbour set on the River Urr. It has a pub, village shop, post office and cafe (open Thurs-Sat at present). The village makes an ideal base for walking, hiking, mountain-biking, or simply relaxing. The towns of Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas are are short drive away for food shopping and the larger town of Dumfries has a multitude of shops to explore if that's your thing. The scenery around Palnackie is absolutely stunning, the air is clean and the locals are extremely friendly - what more can you ask for!
