FAQs about hotels in Oban

Gateway to the Inner Hebrides

Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.

The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.

Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.

Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.

As the capital of North Argyll, Oban has a great selection of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs available on Booking.com.

Our first visit to Oban and we'll certainly be back. There are a huge choice of hotels (avoid The Columba) to suit all tastes and budgets and a great variety of excellent places to eat. We visited McCaig's Tower from where you get breath taking views of the town and the waters and islands beyond. The small but very informative War Museums is also well worth a visit. We took a ferry to the Isle of Mull and then the bus to Tobermory, but would probably take our car across next time so we could explore a bit more.

My home town has always been friendly towards non locals, it's a small town, that you can walk around all day without feeling drained, stacks of places to eat and drink, and nothing beats the views of the West Coast

Oban is a great holiday destination.

Oban is a great holiday destination. The people, the restaurants, the seafood, the meat.. it's all top quality. (If you pick your restaurants carefully, The Olive Garden, The Waterfront... Ee-usk if you're selective... Cuan Mor maybe) There's an M&S Food Hall if you don't fancy cooking from scratch, Alba delicatessen is good too. Tesco for the basics but remember that, north of the border, there are no special deals on booze. Nicola stopped them. Special legislation! Wow! For long term parking you can use the Tesco car park if you go online and book it using the Yourparkingspace app. This is handy for the town. Lots of trips/tours are available if you look online, our favourite is the Three Isles.

Oban was great. My booking through Booking.com was terrible.

Oban was great. My booking through Booking.com was terrible. The hotel (Great Western Hotel) was a mess. Booked a third floor “Family Room” ($270), two beds. Upon arrival the elevator (lift) was not working nor had it been working for 8 days before our arrival. My partner uses a cane/walker. Had to walk up the first flight of stairs, even the front desk mentioned she could not walk the stairs as she was winded with the first flight. Offered a first floor room, one bed that was so small you could not get around. Offered a second room… a bit larger but still one bed the carpet had holes, mold in the walls, bathroom was dirty. We opted for a new property again booked through Booking.com. Booking.com offered us a 20pound voucher for our troubles. We have used Booking.com as our go to online booking site. We will no longer be using booking.com as they are willing to book you, but will not back up their booking. Booking.com through reviews (if they cared) would have noticed the negative comments being made. yet still was booking through the website. Even contacting Booking.com my calls were dropped or sent to a dead line.

The hotel is in a perfect location, looking out over Oban Bay. They've made real use of the view with indoor & outdoor seating. The whole stay was great from start to finish. Lovely staff, great facilities & easy to wander into Oban. Got to watch a stunning sunset by walking a whole minute down the road. The breakfast was really good, table service rather than a buffet which felt nice. Rooms were a generous size. I'd gladly stay again.

The location is perfect and the public areas are fantastic. I was in quite a small room which became quite hot despite lowering the heating. The room was exceptionally clean and well dressed but I did find the bathroom claustrophobic. However, this is my second stay at the hotel and I will definitely be back as my son is returning next year to work on Iona and Oban is the perfect stop off point to getting there.

The hotel was intended as a ‘stopping off’ point before a trip to Mull from Oban. The stay was so much more than that! The location is stunning; the room and service excellent; and the meals (including breakfast) were of the highest quality. What more can I say! We will be back.
