FAQs about hotels in Norwich

A Centre of Commerce Through The Ages

Once an important medieval trading centre, Norwich remains a popular shopping destination. The Chapelfield centre is the newest addition, whereas a historic shop sells the city’s most famous export: Colman’s Mustard. Castle Mall is underground, in a hill topped with a keep, part of the 12th-century castle founded by William the Conqueror.

Dating to the same era is the large cobbled square housing a 6-day market. It was said that Norwich had a church for every week, and while that is no longer true, over 30 medieval churches still exist. The cathedral was built using stone from Normandy and boasts England’s 2nd largest cloisters and 2nd tallest spire.

Colourful medieval façades line Elm Hill and the Guildhall is another fine example of the period. Half-timbered Dragon Hall was a trading hall, while St Andrew’s and Blackfriars Halls constitute England’s most intact friary. The 14th-century Cow Tower sits by the River Wensum upstream from Pulls Ferry, the train station and Norwich City FC.

Reportedly, Norwich once had a pub for every day, and today’s traditional inns and modern bars are certainly popular with the student population. Other entertainment options include the Theatre Royal and Playhouse.

Norwich accommodation on Booking.com includes historic hotels with pools, city centre guest houses and riverside apartments, all near to Norwich Airport.

Good all round reasonably Priced hotel. Location near enough to bus stop to get you into Norwich or airport, should you want to leave your car parked at hotel. Clean & tidy and has all you require for a short stay. Breakfast good, and staff friendly and helpful. Bedroom quiet and has all you require, comfortable bed.

We only spent a short day in the city having travelled in on the park and ride bus for an incredible £4 return for two. But we got to spend a good time in and around the cathedral. (so much to see). We enjoyed a lovely lunch in the ultra modern refectory extension. We took a walk down to the river and spent some time with the swans and geese there. Some lovely interesting old houses and such variety. Into Tombland square to look around the interesting shops and cafes. Made welcome in Zizis even though we only wanted a coffee and comfort break. Basically we could see there was loads more to explore (like the castle and bookshops ) and we intend to return again. On the bus back to the park and ride we passed through parts of Norwich that were in the process of being demolished and hopefully would be about to receive more tasteful buildings than the sad 60s and 70s buildings coming down.

Norwich has the feel of a prosperous city; there are charity shops on some main streets but they're more 'Vintique' than shabby. Several shopping malls. If you like history there is lots : Castle & Cathedral are obvious draws but the areas around Bedford Street & Elm Hill show the mediaeval & later 'ordinary' buildings. For CAMRA lovers there are at least 30 pubs listed (2024 guide) ! Vegans who like an Indian vibe should visit 'Namaste Village'. While there are car parks in the city area there's also a good Park & Ride system; free parking and very reasonable bus charges.

We went to see the revamped castle museum which was well done but a bit expensive to get in. The tea room was however very reasonably priced. The cathedral is wonderful inside. Don't be put off by the disappointing west front! Free to go in but donations requested. Good range of shops and eateries in town. The arcade is worth visiting if only for the architecture.

The ‘fair city’ of Norwich has many attractions.

The ‘fair city’ of Norwich has many attractions. Back in the day it had a church for every week of the year and a pub for every day of the year and many remain. The bus service is excellent and if you’re looking for excellent reasonably priced eating establishments I recommend the Belgian Monk (which also has excellent beer) and the Waffle House. Norwich was the second largest city of the country until industrialisation led to the growth of others. Today it’s quieter and more peaceful than its competitors. If you tire of its attractions you remain within easy striking distance of the Norfolk Broads and the lovely beaches of North Norfolk.
