FAQs about hotels in Inverness

Gateway to the Highlands and Loch Ness

A jewel with historic buildings and charming streets, Inverness is surrounded by a typical Scottish Highland landscape. It is located 10 km from Loch Ness, along the mouth of the Ness River and the Moray Firth coast. It is regarded as the northernmost city in the United Kingdom, and capital of the Highlands.

Take a walk around the Old Town, visit St Andrew’s Cathedral, and make a stopover in the charming Victorian Market. The Old High St Stephen's Church is the oldest building in town, and has been a religious site since pre-Christian times.

The Inverness Castle overlooks the river and is nowadays the seat of the Sheriff Court. A hotel in Inverness city centre is ideal to enjoy the different cultural and recreational activities in town.

Watch the Atlantic salmon jumping out the river near the Ness Islands, and try to catch a glimpse of the famous monster of Loch Ness. The Cairngorms National Park is 40 km away, and Chanonry Point is the best spot to watch dolphins, just 24 km away.

Inverness hotels include a large offer of small, cosy guest houses, B&B’s, and rural cottages, allowing a closer contact with the nature. Don’t miss the Inverness accommodation deals on Booking.com!

It’s a small compact place with some great restaurants and bars, the locals are so friendly which makes the place what it is, Scotland in general is like this wherever you go. The river and Caledonia canal walks are beautiful. It’s a good place to access the mountains and surrounding areas or for a chilled city break.

To my mind, its a go to destination, helped by direct train services to London. However, in my opinion through my recent 3 experiences, the Sleeper services between Euston and Fort William, and Euston to Inverness are expensive, over-priced, currently not fit for purpose and unreliable.

This was our first trip to Inverness.

This was our first trip to Inverness. We had thought of doing the typical day trips or other touristy stuff that we usually do, however we spent our days lazing around the small town and staring at river Ness for most part. There's a beautiful calm and peacefulness at Inverness. Food is exceptionally good. We had fish and chips from a nearby shop, which was not even one of the big names, and it tasted like heaven. Then we had chinese for dinner from a non-descript takeaway (not non-descript now, the name is Dennis's takeaway), it turned out to be gold star. If you really want to unwind, relax or curl up with a book, Inverness is your cozy living room armchair!

Visiting the battlefield was a very interesting, educational and memorable experience. Unfortunately weather was not the best to enjoy Loch Ness and other recreational areas. Getting around Inverness is easy. Several restaurants and shops around. Spanish Bar and restaurant La Tortilla Asesina, close to Blue Ness apartment, was a nice find.

Have you ever gone someplace and felt like: "Wow.

Have you ever gone someplace and felt like: "Wow. I'm home."? That was Inverness for me. I've been to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen before, but I fell in love with Inverness. The people, the city, the mythology surrounding the Scottish culture, the quiet location, the music (live music every night at The Highlander). It just felt like home. We had a lovely dinner at The Mustard Seed, which I highly recommend, did one of the best walking tours I've ever experienced on our first day, and did a dolphin watching boat tour on our last day. I cried when I left. Can't wait to go back and see more of Inverness and expand to the Black Isle.

Best apartment in Scotland during our 2-week road trip. Very cosy apartment, well equipped, with nice furnitures and a very tasty decoration, very well maintained, very clean. A nice and large dining kitchen. Very confortable beds and rooms. A large living room with cosy sofas. Some books and games. The possibility to park easily in front of the apartment in the street is very convenient. Beauly is a nice and pleasant village, at 15-minute drive distance from Inverness. Possibility to travel to Inverness by train too. From Beauly.

It is a great starting point to travel all around Scotland and the Highlands. Inverness is just a few minutes away and the place is tidy, comfortable and you got everything you need. The hosts Ian and Oyfrid were also very lovely and kind! We had a great time there.

Overpriced and underdelivered. Definitely, the low point of our tour of Scotland. Never again will we book a Mecure Hotel.
