FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

What is there about Chester not to like .

What is there about Chester not to like . The buildings are absolutely fantastic , the ambiance of the town is one of affluent quality, moreover the people we have met on our 3 visits have been charming , welcoming and helpful. There is a great cathedral, a mix of interesting shops ( my wife loves them) and even an indoor market with a food hall . Add to that the proximity to Cheshire oaks outlet mall , to Liverpool, and to north Wales makes Chester the ideal city to visit . This was our third visit , next spring we will be making our fourth visit .

Its a beautiful place, a lot of independent shops and lots of shopping, You could walk along the wall (which we did) but there was a lot to see in the town. Our plan is to go back but stay a lot longer and venture out to other places nearby like Liverpool. We did visit Chester Zoo ( a great place to visit). but will try the other attractions next time. Chester is definitely one to visit if you have not as yet.

Chester has great Roman ruins, terrific city walls which are an excellent walk, an interesting if slightly basic shopping area. Above all it has some outstanding restaurants, a really surprising number for the size of the city. The Grill and the Forge were particularly outstanding but the quality overall was superb.

Being only 15 mins from Chester City centre but felt miles away from anywhere. Set in beautiful grounds this hotel is so peaceful. Lovely walled garden and nice areas to sit & enjoy a drink outside. Our room had a balcony with a gorgeous view of the garden and felt like a mini holiday. The pool area opens at 7am, so perfect to use first before heading out for the day. The food is excellent as was the service.
