We visited as a starting point for pursuing our interest in the Second World War Normandy D Day events. Ouistreham is ideal for this. We were able to get by bus to the new British D Day memorial (although it would have been better if a more frequent service), could reach Caen easily, and other key areas by public transport, although we didn't do this on this short trip.

Easy to visit the historical areas from this base and close to the ferry port. We hadn't planned it as a 'seaside/beach' type of holiday, but looking at the local towns and the area in general, it's worth returning. Much nicer, cleaner and quieter than UK seaside towns. Less touristy than Spanish/Greek beach holidays. A lovely, surprise find.

On this occasion we only stayed overnight but we have had two previous week-long stays with grandchildren in rented accommodation. The beach is stunning and what fun to watch the ferries coming and going! This is a place very much overlooked by British families looking for a nice French holiday. As elsewhere the weather can be variable but when sunny, it’s glorious. And there is so much to do in the area with all the Normandy Landing history on the doorstep.

It is a lovely place to discover, beautiful walkways along the the marina, the historic center is pretty. The big problem is the presence of the africans,, all young men with Iphones and trendy clothing, certainly not refugees, lurking around everywhere, day and night, breaking into UK cars, if they are big enough to try to get to England. They are squatting around every corner, littering , urinating etc. Really it is a shame.

We were getting there to eat at "La moulerie" in front of the Casino (for sea food) and get to the "Criée" early in the morning to buy fish and sea food. We managed to get everything done properly.

I really wasn't there long enough to say anything about Ouistreham itself - I stopped briefly in Caen on the way and I certainly enjoyed the old half-timbered houses in the centre. The Castle will be a must see on my next visit, as will the beautiful old Norman/Romanesque churches and the nearby coastline, such as nearby-Dives-sur-Mer, where I stayed on a previous trip to Normandy and I can certainly recommend with its ancient church. Falaise Castle, said to be the castle of William the Conqueror, is the far side of Caen.

The location was perfect for an overnight stop on the way home from the ferry port. I’ve stayed in Best Western hotels before and found the quality could be ‘variable’ but this one was very good indeed. More expensive than a hotel even closer to the port that I’ve previously used but well worth the extra cost and I’d definitely stay there again. The staff were friendly and helpful and the range of breakfast options was more than enough for most people.

The L'Ecailler is an older hotel in the centre of Ouistreham and is an ideal 1 night stay as you prepare to travel on the Ferry to Portsmouth. The hotel has no pretensions of being upmarket and the rooms are not big, but the room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the shower was hot. The hotel is close to local restaurants and bars, and provides quick access to the ferry port. It met our expectation of "cheap and cheerful"
