Located in the Dordogne department of France, Bergerac is a city of art and history, ideal for a short break.
Built on the Dordogne River, the town's heritage and history are closely intertwined with the traditional flat-bottomed gabarre boats that ply the river.
Wine and food lovers will also enjoy a Bergerac city break, as Bergerac is located in the Périgord Pourpre region (the word pourpre, meaning purple, comes from the autumn colour of the vine leaves), and boasts 12,600 hectares of vineyards and 12 wines with designations of origin. Famous wines, goat cheese, foie gras and Périgord truffles mean you're sure to find what you're looking for at the farmers' markets or wineries in Bergerac or the surrounding area.

friendly, quiet town towards the end of the season. excellent restaurants that did tend to close at 9-9.30. local wine is cheap and fine quality and can recommend Quai de Cyrano for all things wine related- The Halle artisan market hall was well worth a visit especially the chocolatier

Bergerac is on the whole non descript but has some very good restaurants. It is the type of place to pass through, perhaps spending a pleasant day there, but in my opinion not to linger !!
I would hate the thought of spending a week there.

Delightful place, wonderful buildings in the old town if you like architecture. 'The Little Train' gives a nice history tour with recorded narration in English. The 1h river cruise in a traditional Gaberre boat is fun too. Be aware that EVERYTHING closes for lunch until 2pm. Even the cemetery.
Exceptional eating and drinking! Brasseries, delicatessens and markets are wonderful.
Easy train to Bordeaux for a day trip.
Sadly the town museum has disappeared. The Museum of Tobacco is OK but very little English interpretation. Likewise the Dordonha gallery, very little English explanation but nice exhibits.
Be aware- Taxi required for airport transfer. Buses not at convenient times and seats must be reserved in advance!
To visit the closest vineyard Monbazillac is minimum 25E each way in a taxi if you do not hire a car. Instead the Quai Cyrano wine shop above the Tourism Office does wine tastings and has a wide range of local wines, with a lovely sunny terrace overlooking the river Dordogne!
If you do hire a car, there is a nice swimming lake Pombonne not far out of town to the north. The locals use it a lot.

The Old Town if lovely, but a little further out, it is dirty and neglected with weeds growing out of the edges of the pavements, pavements cracked and broken and rubbish overflowing from bins. Very, very disappointung.

This apartment is my idea of heaven. Excellent wifi, absolute silence and spotlessly clean. Coco has thought of everything. The little patio is so sweet. I kept expecting to see a fairy appear from the plants. There’s something so enchanting about it. Literally a few minutes from Bergerac train station and about seven minutes from the old town.
Lovely welcome from staff. Very clean. Free parking close by. Nice pool area. Love Bergerac and it was just a short walk into town. Hotel in a quiet area so that was good.
