Welcoming gite d'etape with a buzzing terrace cafe - quite a surprise after emerging from the empty hills - very friendly proprietor and family. Took care of me as the sole overnight guest that night and the sole evening diner - though the place is big and surely handles large numbers at other times. Attractive setting by a lake. Not remote enough to be a mountain refuge but high enough to attract a lot of walkers and cyclists. Cold water and cold beer welcome after cycling the Col des Pailheres in July.

We stayed at the newly opened Mercure Hôtel in Ax-les-Thermes for a weekend getaway and overall had a lovely experience. The location is ideal — just a 5-minute walk from the train station and perfectly situated for hiking (randonnées) in the surrounding mountains. The hotel’s facilities are great. We especially appreciated the wellness area — we tried the spa (hammam, sauna, and jacuzzi), as well as the indoor pool. It was the perfect way to relax after a long day of hiking. Our room was spotless and modern, and the bed was incredibly comfortable — probably one of the best we've ever slept on! The bathroom was fully equipped with everything we needed. That said, there are still a few areas that need improvement. The breakfast (brunch) was quite limited. We understand the hotel had just opened the week before, so we hope the selection will expand with time. However, basic items like a toaster (grill-pain) would have been appreciated. We also had dinner at the Château restaurant owned by the hotel. While the setting was beautiful and very romantic, the food didn’t quite meet expectations. My boyfriend had the trout with a strong rouille sauce and fries, and I had lamb with fregola. The flavors were average, and the service was quite slow, even though the restaurant wasn’t full. Again, we assume this might be due to the staff still being in training. All in all, it’s a beautiful place to stay, and we’re sure it will only improve with time. We’d gladly return — especially for the spa, pool, and fresh mountain air!

The staff were AMAZING, receptionists and specially the staff at the SPA. The SPA was simply the best part because it is very easy to go there and enjoy the saunas, pool and Jacuzzis and then just go down directly to your room. The room and all the facilities were very clean, everything was comfortable. And it is very well located, at the heart of the little city. So yes, I highly recommend it.

Main thing always the quality of welcome.

Main thing always the quality of welcome. The proprietor and his family were welcoming and flexible. Ate evening meal and breakfast at the property. It is in a mountain village and there aren't other options nearby (as far as I know), but the food was robust and well prepared. Bedroom was on top floor and a bit airless in summer, with a loud fan occasionally running in the next room. But easy to adapt to this. Place is easy to reach by road from Ax-les-Thermes but also on some major walking routes and classic bike climbs. For a solid, unpretentious stay and the chance to meet people, my wholehearted recommendation.
