Staying in this hotel was one of the best experiences in China 🇨🇳. The manager did an absolutely fantastic job, taking us from the railway station and providing us with warm welcome. The quality of service in China is one of the best in the world and this place is a role model. We received gifts and bathroom equipment. We were showed how to visit the city and how to manage. The big advantage for this hotel is the place itself. It looks like a historic traditional Chinese style, and it makes the stay an adventure where you can go back in a time. It is a good mix between modern standard of living and traditional climate The last thing worth to mention, I forgot to take my cosmetic and the manager sent it to my hotel in Beijing immediately. About the city, people say that it is a touristic open-air museum and it is not an actual china. It is true, but this is why it is worth visiting this place as it is inspiring and climatic. It is not touristic in terms of Turkish or Egipt scams place, but it is touristic because of its history and buildings that the government decided to keep in unchanged shape. 2 nights would be perfect to go around in rest mode, before going to more crowded and noisy cities. Beware Alipay is necessary to buy tickets online and visit all museums.

If you want the romance of a traditional courtyard with true boutique-hotel comfort, stay here. The property is brand-new, immaculate, and beautifully lit at night. Rooms are quiet and minimalist with great water pressure, reliable fast Wi-Fi, plenty of bedside outlets, and strong AC/heat. The bed and linens meet Western comfort standards. Breakfast can be chosen Chinese or Western—I tried both during my stay and each was fresh, well-presented, and generous (fresh juice and good coffee/tea included). Staff were proactive and friendly, arranged luggage pickup from the city gate, and communicated smoothly in English. The location is perfect for walking the lanes yet peaceful once inside the courtyard. Tips for Western travelers: cars can’t enter the old town, so message the hotel for pickup; wear comfortable shoes; and leave time to simply enjoy the courtyard—part heritage museum, part modern gallery. A flawless stay.

I really made the right choice with this homestay in Pingyao! The location is absolutely a hidden gem—just a two-minute walk gets you to Rishengchang Bank, so there’s no need to get up early to soak in the Jin merchant culture. It’s super convenient to head back for a break after visiting the attractions. What’s more, the surrounding area is bustling with life. When you stroll out in the evening, the lanterns light up, and old shops and street food stalls are right in front of you, full of that lively, authentic vibe. No need to hunt for places to eat; just step into any spot, and it’s sure to be delicious. The biggest surprise, though, is the service here—they truly take care of every little detail. When I checked in, the owner warmly introduced local attractions, even telling me which shop has the most authentic Pingyao beef and the best time to visit Rishengchang to avoid crowds. That kind of thoughtful care makes the whole trip feel so warm. I’ll definitely stay here again when I come back to Pingyao. Great location, amazing atmosphere, and service that’s second to none—highly recommended!

The service was completely unexpected. Before check-in, you will ask when to arrive in Pingyao, and you will be informed in advance that you will arrive at the store, and you will not take a detour at all. After check-in, give us a detailed introduction to the scenic spots. The yard is decorated in antique color, and the room is warm and tidy, which really feels like home. An unforgettable lodging experience! This hostel mesmerized us with its well-preserved historical courtyard, making us feel as if we were living in a museum, steeped in charm and history. We had the pleasure of staying in both the room in the main courtyard and the Yaodong room. Each room was spacious, featuring super large, comfortable beds that ensured a restful night's sleep. The cleanliness and service at the hostel were impeccable. Every area was maintained spotlessly. The staff were warm and always eager to assist, making us feel truly welcomed. We stayed only in the ancient city, inside the walls. It's a unique and very well maintained location, full of attractions to be visited. All the attractions are included in a ticket valid for 3 days. We stayed one day only and we selected the 5 main highlights of the city. The streets at night are sparkling with live music everywhere.

This hotel has more of a bare-bones appeal to it, but comes with a long history and period-accurate restoration. It is in the Pingyao Old City, they allow late check-in and check-out. Hosts speak english and are very kind and helpful.

The city is undeniably beautiful and feels like a living museum, perfectly preserved in time. However, it’s very touristy, with shops that all seem to offer the same souvenirs, making it feel like a true tourist trap. It’s worth a quick visit, but I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time there. Additionally, I was disturbed to see many pigs and other animals kept in small quarters in some stores. If you’re sensitive to animal welfare issues, this may be hard to stomach. Overall, while the city has its charm, be mindful of its tourist-centric nature.

Beautiful ancient city, and you still can feel the daily normal leaving of its inhabitants. Liked the most to have 99.9999% chinese tourist at this time of the year, Mid March. Only 4 westerners encountered. Chinese History at its best. Lots of historical places to visit and learn from ancient China. Unmissable for local and foreigner travellers.

Incredibly beautiful town, totally made up of traditional Chinese architecture (at least on the main streets). You can buy a ticket that allows entry into many of the sites, including the Draft Bank, Temple of the City God, Confucius Temple and so many more, and then spend a day wandering around exploring them as you come across them. (Note that some of the smaller ones have almost no English signs, so it can be difficult to know what they are!). We bought the ticket from a window nearby (1 minute east) of the draft bank, but there may be other places. It's also interesting to go up the City Walls and see the town from above.

We only had a short stay in Pingyao as part of a trip to China but this hotel was perfect for it. The staff were friendly and helpful, letting us know the best places to visit and providing us with a map. We had to leave early the next day and they even sent us on our way with a packed breakfast. The hotel itself is gorgeous, really putting you at the heart of the historic city. We were given a choice to upgrade our room and it was beautiful. A very special hotel in a very special place.

We spent only one night at the hotel but he had a very good time. The hotel offered free pickup and drop off from the train station, we received a warm welcome, there are western and Chinese breakfast options which was nice! Walking distance to the main tourist attractions. We also received a farewell gift which was very thoughtful so once again thank you for making us feel welcomed!

The building is really stunning, well decorated, it feels like a time machine. The location can hardly be much better, right at the center of the old city, close to the shops and restaurants. The hotel staff were very kind and friendly. They arranged for me a day trip to the Wang family compound and made several restaurants suggestions which I really enjoyed.

As foreigners, Pingyao and China in general can be confusing. The staff at the Water Hotel put us at ease immediately. They picked us up from the station, gave great advice on things to see around the city, helped us with our bags on the challenging old streets, and made our stay fantastic. Highly recommend.
