FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

The way Walter Burley Griffin planned out the city of Canberra it was very easy to navigate around. Visiting the Australian War Memorial is a real eye opener and we wished we had a few more spare days to explore the Memorial fully. We didn't have time to visiit Parliament House which we were keen to visiit.

I'll start by saying that I love Canberra...it's so easy to get around by car, attractions are easy to get to and all that I visited had ample parking facilities...free at the War Memorial and Mint but user pays at The National Gallery and Old Parliament House. Staff at all of the above were exceptional when it came to customer service...no question was too hard, or too simple...staff at all the above answered all my inquiries with grace and charm. I spent the entire day at The War Memorial and didn't get to see everything on display...the Last Post Ceremony at the end of the day was quite moving. The National Gallery had significantly altered its displays since I last visited two years ago...I was slightly miffed at the lack of any paintings from members of "The Heidelberg School" but got over that as I wandered through the current displays.

Yes, enjoy Canberra.

Yes, enjoy Canberra. Elected to visit National Gallery as priority. Excellent choice for sights and eating. Other sites available included the near by National Library, and the further away National Museum. Did not have enough time for the latter two. While my visit only one night, it reminded to pleasures - and multiple options - in Canberra. (In my case arrived by bus from Wodonga,Vic and took bus to Sydney. Great modes of travel.Inexpensive too!

Plenty of carparking. Checkin was easy and all staff were lovely and friendly.. Most comfortable hotel beds I've ever slept in. Easily accessible, lovely and quiet, and not far out of the Canberra city area. The rooms are cosy, not big or anything spectacular, but as the name states, it's budget accommodation. Perfect to stay when you're out most of the day and only need somewhere to sleep and get ready. This will remain my place to stay when visiting Canberra for short breaks.

Lovely new hotel close to Canberra Airport and Majura Shopping Centre. Decor was lovely and modern, the room was spacious and clean. Front desk also gave me early check-in for no extra charge, great parking options (extra $12 a day). Beds comfortable and well stocked mini bar. Will stay again next time we are in Canberra.
