When my driver edged up the narrow-inclined driveway of this very modern home, I didn’t know what to expect. But Pearle and her husband Ranjan greeted me with broad smiles and open arms. After they had retired, they built this sophisticated home on their family’s property. Since the terrain of Matale is mostly mountainous, their home is perched up high on a small hill, allowing a beautiful view of the city from their wide terrace. Communication was swift and efficient as their daughter fielded email questions from the UK. English was spoken perfectly by all members of the family, so no worries for any miscommunication. I had arrived in the late afternoon and Pearle offered me tea. Ranjan returned with some short eats and we sat around chatting. The conversation was easy and I felt like I was visiting good friends for the afternoon. My room was located just off their living room with an adjacent bathroom with contemporary fixtures – it felt like I was in a fancy hotel! The stylish room with extremely high ceilings was spacious and tastefully decorated with an enormous mosquito net tied with ribbons around the large four poster bed. There is a portable air conditioner/fan which was not really needed as the evenings are usually cool and temperate. Breakfast was a luxurious feast with red rice string hoppers, potato curry, dal, green gram and a delicious, spicy chicken curry. Watermelon, pineapple, and sweet juicy papaya from their garden rounded out the meal. After retirement, Pearle turned her interests to cooking and she is certainly an accomplished cook! My only regret was staying only one night and will certainly come back for a longer visit!

From the moment I stepped into the villa, the exceptional service and the warmth of the host, Jennifer, and her family left an indelible mark on my experience. Jennifer deserves a special mention for her outstanding hospitality. Despite our late-night check-in at 1 am, she made my arrival seamless and stress-free. Her dedication to ensuring our comfort was evident right from the start, and her warm welcome instantly made us feel at home. One of the standout features of Hilltop Retreat is undoubtedly the breathtaking view it offers. The picturesque vistas of Matale and its surroundings were absolutely mesmerizing. Whether it was sipping a cup of tea on the balcony or simply gazing at the landscape, the view added a magical touch to our stay. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Jennifer and her family for going above and beyond to make my stay memorable. They graciously accommodated my request to have breakfast ready by 6 am, as I had an early work commitment. Everything! Amazing location with great views - we watched the sunset from our room. Staff were all very friendly and polite, very accommodating, we went during low season so we were the only guests and they arranged breakfast lunch and dinner whenever we wanted. All the food was delicious and such huge portions! One of the days we had a private guide drive us to various view points in the area and reception organised our taxi from the airport and to our next location and everything went very smoothly.

Stayed for 3 nights and this was our favourite place during our Sri Lanka trip. Homely feel and amazing food and service. Enjoyed the library and endless cups of excellent tea. Our room was comfortable and clean, lots of hot water. Wifi worked very well in the library area. Tea tasting was interesting and some nice walks in the area. We only had one night here. Beautiful location. dinner was a delicious classic Sri Lankan meal and breakfast was a great omelette cooked up by the wonderful Ashoka. The views are spectacular from the top of the hill. Also great view from the pool. Christo was also very welcoming and made our stay as comfortable as possible. He also took us on a bush walk around the property showing us all the different plants, herbs and fruits. If you’re lucky like we were you may spot a few wild elephants as well as the roam the hills around the property.

Sarath and his wife Deepthi are the most delightful hosts. We had a wonderful time staying in their beautiful home in the jungle. We had a steam massage (highly recommended) and Sarath took us for walks around his spice plantation. It’s a beautiful place to unwind and chill, and you are looked after so well. Deepthi’s cooking is amazing. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Guesthouse is incredibly clean and well-maintained. We truly enjoyed the delicious breakfast they provided, especially the fresh fruits, Sri lankan meals, and the fresh juices. The bathroom was spotless, which we greatly appreciated. We will always remember our stay here fondly and highly recommend Pearls Homestay to anyone visiting Matale.

Amazing experience, beautiful location, wonderful staff, excellent service, lovely staff, relaxing peaceful place, they arranged kandy city tour for me by tuktuk, delicious food. I would love to go there again. comfortable stay, extremely clean.

Everything was perfect. There is plenty of parking space. The owner is very clear with the prices and directions. If something was discussed before the visit, it won't change. The caretaking staff was very professional and helpful. Their breakfast was amazing, and there were several curries. The building and the garden are kept very clean. The beds were comfortable, and the washrooms were very clean. The location itself is calm and serene. Highly recommended. There's enough room for 14 people at once.
