But Pearle and her husband Ranjan greeted me with broad smiles and open arms. After they had retired, they built this sophisticated home on their family’s property. Since the terrain of Matale is mostly mountainous, their home is perched up high on a small hill, allowing a beautiful view of the city from their wide terrace. Communication was swift and efficient as their daughter fielded email questions from the UK. English was spoken perfectly by all members of the family, so no worries for any miscommunication. I had arrived in the late afternoon and Pearle offered me tea. Ranjan returned with some short eats and we sat around chatting. The conversation was easy and I felt like I was visiting good friends for the afternoon. My room was located just off their living room with an adjacent bathroom with contemporary fixtures – it felt like I was in a fancy hotel! The stylish room with extremely high ceilings was spacious and tastefully decorated with an enormous mosquito net tied with ribbons around the large four poster bed. There is a portable air conditioner/fan which was not really needed as the evenings are usually cool and temperate. Breakfast was a luxurious feast with red rice string hoppers, potato curry, dal, green gram and a delicious, spicy chicken curry. Watermelon, pineapple, and sweet juicy papaya from their garden rounded out the meal. After retirement, Pearle turned her interests to cooking and she is certainly an accomplished cook! My only regret was staying only one night and will certainly come back for a longer visit!

My recent stay at Hilltop Retreat in Matale was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I stepped into the villa, the exceptional service and the warmth of the host, Jennifer, and her family left an indelible mark on my experience. Jennifer deserves a special mention for her outstanding hospitality. Despite our late-night check-in at 1 am, she made my arrival seamless and stress-free. Her dedication to ensuring our comfort was evident right from the start, and her warm welcome instantly made us feel at home. One of the standout features of Hilltop Retreat is undoubtedly the breathtaking view it offers. The picturesque vistas of Matale and its surroundings were absolutely mesmerizing. Whether it was sipping a cup of tea on the balcony or simply gazing at the landscape, the view added a magical touch to our stay. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Jennifer and her family for going above and beyond to make my stay memorable. They graciously accommodated my request to have breakfast ready by 6 am, as I had an early work commitment. Their attention to detail and commitment to meeting my needs elevated my experience to new heights. Hilltop Retreat truly lives up to its name as a haven of tranquility. It provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, whether you're visiting for work or leisure. The villa offers a serene and comfortable retreat that rejuvenates the soul. Dilini is an amazing host, she recommended us nice spots in Knuckles Forrest Reserve. I would definitely recommend to stay in Matale for more than 1 night and visit Knuckles as much as possible, the nature is really beautiful (although good to have a driver or a car to visit all the spots). Also, the room was very clean with all the needed facilities. Special thank you to Dilini for making a delicious cappuccino during the breakfast!

It turned out that we were the only guests, and we felt like really special ones. We were welcomed with fresh juice and a nice conversation by two lovely waiters/kitchen chefs. The view is amazing—better than in the photos. Breakfast was delicious. Our room had a cute balcony on the back side, and it was super quiet. The room was clean, and the staff were really attentive. They helped us organize a tuk-tuk to the city and arranged a car to take us on a full-day trip with a few stops along the way.

Sarath and his wife Deepthi are the most delightful hosts. We had a wonderful time staying in their beautiful home in the jungle. We had a steam massage (highly recommended) and Sarath took us for walks around his spice plantation. It’s a beautiful place to unwind and chill, and you are looked after so well. Deepthi’s cooking is amazing. Wish we could have stayed longer!
