It’s away from the main road and not noisy. The house is so cozy and Pearlie and Rajan are so great people. I really enjoyed their company and those delicious meals they cooked. They treated me with so many tasty Sri Lankan curries. I loved everything. And sweats also. And they adjusted to my food preferences. Being vegetarian, not eating garlic, onion and chilly in Sri Lanka can be quite hard, almost every meal has smth I don’t eat. But they cooked for me the most delicious pure veg and sattvic food. I absolutely loved my stay there. And was kinda a bit sad yo leave.

My recent stay at Hilltop Retreat in Matale was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I stepped into the villa, the exceptional service and the warmth of the host, Jennifer, and her family left an indelible mark on my experience. Jennifer deserves a special mention for her outstanding hospitality. Despite our late-night check-in at 1 am, she made my arrival seamless and stress-free. Her dedication to ensuring our comfort was evident right from the start, and her warm welcome instantly made us feel at home. One of the standout features of Hilltop Retreat is undoubtedly the breathtaking view it offers. The picturesque vistas of Matale and its surroundings were absolutely mesmerizing. Whether it was sipping a cup of tea on the balcony or simply gazing at the landscape, the view added a magical touch to our stay. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Jennifer and her family for going above and beyond to make my stay memorable. They graciously accommodated my request to have breakfast ready by 6 am, as I had an early work commitment. Their attention to detail and commitment to meeting my needs elevated my experience to new heights. Hilltop Retreat truly lives up to its name as a haven of tranquility. It provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, whether you're visiting for work or leisure. The villa offers a serene and comfortable retreat that rejuvenates the soul. So peaceful!! This was a true highlight of our trip. The beds in the tents were soooo comfy, we ended up extending for two extra night. We went on a really great hike with our guide Banu too who was so knowledgeable, it really topped off the experience for us. If you’re looking for something off the tourist track and really in nature this is definitely the place to book.

Dave’s place is a paradise—peaceful, incredibly beautiful, and thoughtfully designed. The house was spotless and tastefully furnished, with fresh flowers and other welcoming touches that made it feel cozy and warm. The tradition of afternoon tea was especially lovely—restorative and a thoughtful way to connect with guests while introducing them to local teas. The food was excellent. We had the chance to try many new dishes and discover a wide range of Sri Lankan ingredients and flavors. The tea experience was very well done. We picked tea alongside the local tea ladies working on the property’s seven-acre plantation, and afterward, Dave walked us through the entire tea-making process—from plucking to producing both green and black tea. His passion for tea, and more broadly for his community and the work he's doing there, really shines through. The surrounding environment is magical. We went on a five-hour hike through the area—one of the best hikes we've ever done. The people in the nearby village of Gammaduwa were also incredibly welcoming, friendly, and kind. The staff were professional, warm, and well-prepared. Dave himself is a fantastic host. He even helped us arrange a driver at a fair price, which we greatly appreciated. The vision behind this guesthouse is truly inspiring—it reflects Dave’s deep care for the local community and his desire to make a meaningful impact. I really encourage anyone staying here to take a moment to learn more about it. It deserves recognition and appreciation.

The location has a history, and the property was only modified as a guest house while keeping the old design. It is unique because of that. The area around the property is very quiet and very green, with many different types of trees/spices. The staff was very friendly, especially the manager (Christo). He contacted us before we arrived to make sure everything was arranged. The food was delicious, and the price was reasonable.

Sarath and his wife Deepthi are the most delightful hosts. We had a wonderful time staying in their beautiful home in the jungle. We had a steam massage (highly recommended) and Sarath took us for walks around his spice plantation. It’s a beautiful place to unwind and chill, and you are looked after so well. Deepthi’s cooking is amazing. Wish we could have stayed longer!
