November to March is the season for dolphin watching excursions, as this is when the seas are calm. During this period, hundreds of dolphins and in some instances thousands can be observed in large pods just ½ hour on shore.

Anawilundawa is a RAMSAR site and bird sanctuary located one hour from Alankuda. It consists of seven connected man-made tanks constructed in the 12th century AD and is located on the western migratory bird route.
